Case failure - finally happened to me

My hearing is already about gone, so I need my eyes for lip reading! I have found DeWalt's safety glasses to be comfortable for all day wear and inexpensive. I bought 4 pair, instead of changing lenses, I just change glasses, Clear, indoor/outdoor, smoke and polarized. Will need a fifth pair soon with the cheaters at the bottom.

Not sure what happened to me, but I was shooting small mfg 9mm ball. Never again, or at least I will weigh all the rounds before I shoot them. It destroyed the grip panel and broke the ejector. I figure it was a double charge. I was wearing my normal glasses. debris and powder hit my face. my prescription glasses were a big help. I normally shoot uncorrected. now days I shoot w shooting glasses. and I know better. been using shooting glasses for many years. that day I was not, but did have my normal specs on!

I’m very protective of ears, I’m a music teacher so my daily routine is hard enough on them.

I’m ashamed to say I’m awful about wearing shooting glasses. I’m going to get a pair. Done.

Thank you for this post, you very well have saved my eyes.
I’ve been a drummer for 25 years, shooting for 15. I’ve been wearing in ear monitors for years and always wore hearing protection drumming, practice or at shows.

I’ve probably experienced 4-5 9mm, a 300 win mag, and a 7mm out of a shipping container without hearing protection, all by accident. Even so, I consider myself lucky to still have 100% perfect hearing.

This is a great reminder on eye protection. I am pretty bad about it while “just” shooting long range stuff. I need to improve that.

I had a box of old 30/40 Krag ammunition (Winchester 180 Silvertip) I decided I would chronograph some to see what they did. I fired four shots and every one split just like that. Did no harm but a little disconcerting. The rest of the box will remain unfired. By the way, the velocity, from a 22 inch barrel, was 2445fps. WH

Yep, same here, but my ammo was commercially loaded by a small local company. I think it was double charged.

A guy I know had pressure problems with factory Hornady 300PRC. 2 cases blew the base halfway off. After a bunch of urging, he contacted Hornady and they requested that he return the case (less a box or two.) Hornady sent him recompense for 2 new cases (couldn't legally ship the ammo to him because - well, California.) Shooter and rifle surprisingly both survived unscathed.

You can have hearing loss from one event. Mine was a military tank firing line. I took some ammo to the dud pit during a cease fire, so I didn't have muffs on. The pit was at the end of the line and to the rear of the cannon muzzles, but, was ahead of the .50cal. The range went active just as I turned to head back.

The .50cal on the nearest tank let loose with a 5 round burst. The pressure pulses hurt enough that I thought I may have burst an ear drum. It didn't, but I lost all of the med to high freq on the ear facing the gun. I was just lucky the other ear was turned away from the gun.

One time.

Glasses. I've worn prescription glasses for 30 years now. I can't count the number of times metal fragments have chipped the glasses, including a couple incidents with firearms and burst cases.

I never shoot without glasses or hearing protection.

gosh, I feel real bad for the Army guys wearing the defective ear protection in the sand box while everyone was firing an FN 308 all around them. Brings us to the Sig Fury round. the pressure pulse is going to be something!!
