Case failure - finally happened to me

Let’s ALL be honest here. We know in our heart of hearts that hearing protection and safety glass should be worn 100% of the time when shooting…but I’ll bet most of us have bent that rule on occasion. I certainly have. Luckily I was wearing protective glasses yesterday and only got stung in the cheek. It took several decades of shooting to eventually have the “golly gee” event that could have just as easily been a crappy day in the E.R. or worse. Just a friendly reminder to always wear protective equipment. D782E161-A20F-4594-8979-ABAABEF93841.jpeg

Four months ago, shooting 9mm SIG P226, a primer burst sending hot stuff and part of primer pocket and a piece of my ejector back into my eyes and cheek.

NO issues because I was wearing good-fitting wrap-around eye protection.

I’m very protective of ears, I’m a music teacher so my daily routine is hard enough on them.

I’m ashamed to say I’m awful about wearing shooting glasses. I’m going to get a pair. Done.

Thank you for this post, you very well have saved my eyes.

Give these a spin. I have a couple of pairs and really like the clear. Not quite as good as my Pillas but more than adequate and a fraction of the cost.

Not to long ago I had my hearing checked by my Primary Care Doctor related to turning 65 years old. Twenty years in the military with high speed drills and excessive noise, loud music and life takes it toll. She looked at the results and stated I had a hearing loss in the high frequency range. She offered in the range of a women’s voice. We laughed. I told my wife who just gave me a blank stare . Anyway, I always use hearing protection other than hunting. I usually deer hunt not more than two shots if that. Around the house I now use it when mowing or trimming.

Forum Boss: Just a couple shots can cause more injury. I recommend hunters keep this around their neck. On/off in a couple seconds -- very easy. I also use this with power tools/mowers.

Figured I’d update this post if you guys were interested in a set of glasses.

I looked at a bunch and purchased these ones:

I wanted something with no frame in the middle so I could still shoot out of a scope.

I’ve been using the yellow lenses and have not had an issue with any paralax in the scopes I’m using.

The smoke lens are great as well if it’s really bright.

It’s a good set of lenses if you need some shooting glasses.

I also have a large head and these fit great.

Well, you did it right! Glasses. check. Glad you are OK
I have shot 10's of thousands .223/556.
Was shooting P dogs with a Rem 700 .223, suppressed - no hearing protection, needed, right?

Anyway, a case split and somehow blew brass into my chin, etc. The brass was "welded" onto the bolt face. My handloads - 223 brass not segregated (then) - probably from a previous milspec AR "generous" chamber. reloaded a few more times. You get the picture...
Yeah, toss that brass - earlier than later.
My ears rung for a day or so and hearing never really fully recovered.
I wear glasses so all good there.
I now wear 2X hearing protection.
With a can, too :) :) Glasses every round; ear protection every time. :)
Thanks for the post.

Yes. Right up to the time (long ago) while firing a 1911 (don't know why) an ejected case came straight back and stuck to my right eyelid. Not one day later I purchased my first pair of shooting glasses.
I bought my first pair of Oakley shooting glasses a few years ago and within a week the same thing happened to me.... I saw it coming but of course could move fast enough and BAM right in the center of the right lense.... It hit hard and made a pretty good smack sound not to mention scaring me.... Now I wear them as sun glasses so I have a pair around 24/7.... I don't know if it would have put my eye out but it would have hurt for sure.... The $150 bucks I spend on them is worth every penny to me...
