Carnage in WV

Been hitting the fields pretty hard trying to reduce the ghog population for the local farmers. As of now my total stands at 105 confirmed kills for the year.

Here are a few pics of the results.

Here is a pic of one field where we have taken over 50 ghogs from. You can also see the local scavengers circling above that were feasting on the previous days kills.

No problem Steve.

The one with the synthetic stock is a Savage LRPV chambered in 204 Ruger. I shoot the 39gr. Sierra BK's with IMR 8208 pushing them. Currently has a Sightron SIII 6-24x50 on top.

Next is a Savage 12 with a Lilja barrel chambered in 223AI. Also has a Sharp Shooter Supply 5oz. trigger. I shoot Nosler 50gr. BT's with H335 powder. Scope is a Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite Tactical with mildot.

Next is my Sabre Defence AR in 204 Ruger. I shoot the Sierra 32gr. BK's with Benchmark powder. Scope is a Bushnell 6-24x50 Elite Tactical with mildot.

I also have a 6mm Remmy with a Shilen 10 twist set up for the 87gr. Vmax. Has a Jewell 8oz. trigger and a Sightron SIII sitting on top.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask.

Good shooting & nice guns too. We've had a bad year for the chucks with too much rain and not enough time to shoot. Good to see someone's keeping the population in check.

Around here it's nothing but corn and soybeans.....both of which have been tall for weeks. Can't see them. Not to mention I just don't think there are that many around here. I'm thinking coyotes have made their presence known.

but Nomad47 is one county over, and he's doing well.

Dave - Thanks for the rifle info. I am going to send you a few questions.

Thanks for the compliments on my sticks hogpatrol.

We have been getting a lot of rain here but we are lucky the farmers still plant hay and alfalpha too. It grows fast but the farmers do a good job of keeping it cut. They should be cutting the beans and corn in a few weeks so that should open up some new fields to hunt.

Doesn't look like many are running off after being hit with that little .20 cal :).
Guessing 250 yds & closer? Nothing more fun than shooting a .204 AR !
Happy continued shooting.

Good shootin', Dave. And that sure is a good lookin' hay field. If you have any big time dairy farmers in your area, get to know them. They feed the dairy cows alfalfa for good milk production and they mow it every 30 days when the protein content is highest. Beef cattle need hay (grasses) mixed with the alfalfa otherwise it goes thru them like shit thru a goose.
My daughter and I just got 20 out of a hay/alfalfa mix field that just got its first cutting since it has been so wet.

CTshooter I have to say the 204 is my favorite caliber to shoot varmints with. I have no problem whatsoever taking ghogs with it well past 400 yards as long as I do my part which is easier said than done!! LOL I can take prairie dogs out to 500 yards and beyond with it also.

What a wealth of information here. Not only the enjoyment of the hunt, the rifles but different feeds for dairy and beef cattle.

Even learned not to stand under a goose.

Thanks Bill. Believe you me I know all the dairy farmers around here. Problem is a lot of them have sold their farms to developers back before the housing market collapsed. It is getting harder to find new hunting ground around here. We are now basically a suburb of Washington D.C. >:(

If you ever need someone to help you pop the little diggers in Ohio, let me know. I would love to get a chance to do some really long range shooting with you so you can show me how it's done.

Haha. Thanks T700. As good as a shot I like to think I am(and I'm not),I don't think you have any worries, about me getting them all!! LOL

Dave, I hear ya on the dairy farmers selling out. Last summer I had two big time dairy farmers and one so-so. The so-so got in financial trouble and sold his cows. And one of the two big timers had family issues and sold all his cows. Both of them have gone to strictly beans and corn - no hay or alfalfa.
So I now have one dairy that mows his alfalfa every 30 days and six farmers with beef cattle that have hay/alfalfa fields. I also got five 'beans and corn' farmers where I could shoot 'hogs until about a month or so ago.

It's sad these are the days.

Great job with the shooting and thanks for the pictures and story. I did a lot of Ground Hog hunting in Va. for many years and the Coyotes (or something) have just about wiped them out. Then I went to Ohio and now its the same story there...The 20 Tac has been one of my favorite cartridges for this kind of Varmint hunting and I still use it for Prairie Dogs, Coyotes and Ground Hogs, when I can find some. Good luck and thanks again for the great story and pictures.....George

Anytime George I went out again this weekend and bagged seven more bringing my total for the year to 112 confirmed kills. The hogs still seem to be plentiful around here. Longest shot of the weekend was 398 yards with the Savae 204. Love that little round.

I also picked up another 1000 acres to hunt and I'm going to talk to another farmer who is working about 4800 acres of land so that should give me plenty more targets!! ;D

Dave

Dave,
I am very happy for you ... I have been looking in Va. and West Va. for some good G/Hog hunting but at this point, I haven't been able to find any....Enjoy and good luck...
George

Thanks George,I hope your luck changes. I'm fortunate enough to have a good relationship with the local farmers here so they have been a big help in finding new land to hunt.
One farmer had a real infestation with them. He has a 42 acre field and in a little over three weeks,we have taken 50+ hogs from it.
