Carbon wrapped barrel: muzzle up or down?

Hi,
i am about to rebarrel a rifle with a carbon wrapped barrel.as with all barrels I expect a bit of curve in the bore.
i will have the bore on the chamber side indicated properly for threading the tenon and chambering . Do you tend to index the action so that the muzzle is pointing down or up when everything is finished?

Up... unless it's a short range gun... then maybe down if it means less work to move the shoulder forward.

Up or down, whichever requires less cutting of the shoulder. Most scopes today have plenty elevation to handle either.

if there is a curve I like to clock it so the barrel is pointing at 12 O'clock when finished
Any straight upward movement I believe helps our cause

I've never seen a barrel with a curve in the bore, maybe moving in a helix? To me it appears almost impossible to machine a curved bore.

maybe with newer advancements the barrel makers got this sorted out
However, I have read it is difficult to drill a perfectly straight hole on something as long as a barrel
The drill, following the path of least resistance, such as if it hits a hard/soft spot
will bend when gun drilling.
Hence
a curved bore, not that they tried to machine it that way on purpose
--------------
As well, many barrels I have indicated between centers show a slight bend in the barrel
Also, producing a curved bore,
if the barrel has any appreciable amount of bend to it....
.... I will machine things so the tip of the barrel points up at 12 O'clock

Not doubting you but can't understand a flat curved bow in a barrel. I understand it moving into a helix. Picture this in your mind, a barrel is spinning in a deep hole drill with a nonturning drill going through it.

Kind of like Horizontal Drilling just before Fracking:rolleyes:;)

I hung out a couple of times in a barrel makers shop and saw "how the sausage is made". I saw a 1.25" straight barrel as it came off the machine having been bored.

I was shocked at how far off center the bore was. It seemed like it was closer to the edge than to the center. My friend just said, "Well, this one will be a sporter". LOL

They just chucked it up on the holes on either end and turned it down to a sporter profile so it looked as though the hole at the muzzle end was centered, which it was, but the bore did not follow a straight course to get there.

I’m guessing that’s what happened with this Shilen Rimfire barrel.. The fat end is .012” off center from the smaller diameter muzzle end. Because of that the short taper is not even at all. Very noticeable when spun between centers with dial indicator….

Even when the barrel is turned down it may still be a little wonky. Dial a barrel in and then check outside with dial gauge, usually a bit oval
