Carbon ring

Jeez folks, I posted about the carbon ring which is a problem with .22 rf and other rounds.
It descended into a catfight worse than the current political contretemps.
WE CAN DO BETTER THAN THAT! And we must. As one of our countries forefathers at the beginning of the revolutionary war said (and I paraphrase)
WE MUST ALL HANG TOGETHER, OR WE SHALL SURELY HANG SEPARATELY.

Been away this weekend. I guess I missed something, or not...
I short stroke with a bronze brush & my solvent to remove it. I don't own a borescope any longer so I can't tell if its completely removed or not.
Also, I'm not convinced it wants to be completely removed, rather maintained. I don't know.

Velocette,

I posted this to the thread, then it was deleted so I don't know if you saw it.

But try googling RRDLV you might be able to find the article on cleaning, very good information IMO

Always a great idea to have experienced/ fact based threads.
Along those lines FWIW one of the best ways to handle carbon in any way, shape, and form is IOSSO.
In CF BR the carbon is harder and tougher, rimfire is Pretty straight forward, short rod, nylon brush, IOSSO soaked patch around the nylon brush and, generally, 4-5 short strokes......done.

That said, recently told to try Bore tech C4 carbon remover and am going to test in the next couple days.

I have had good success with Sharp Shoot R's rimfire lead remover cleaner and a brush, then followed up with wipe out.

Two items, one unrelated to the subject at hand.

1. For anyone that can acquire a copy, I heartily recommend "The Art of Rimfire Accuracy" by Bill Calfee. He discusses many subjects, and his comments on the carbon ring and its effect on accuracy are quite interesting and informative.

2. Velocette, are you by any chance a biker? If so, judging by your handle, you will understand why one of several motorcycles I wish I still had was a Thruxton.

I spin a used 6mm brush in the chamber but I hardly ever brush my 22. Maybe a couple of strokes at most.
I shoot a match Shieln. A slight deviation in cleaning changes poi. ARA/PSL/IR50 one shot per bull x 25.
Bench rest guys clean every 50 +- shots.

I go through allot of brushes on my 6mm. Those worn brushes make great 22 brushes !

FWIW much of that part is not only outdated but ultimately proven wrong since it has been shown that it is virtually impossible to maintain carbon fouling. The author pretty much posts as much currently.
Take note....all written pretty much before ratchets and MI barrels .

Agreed, Calfee was all into it back in the day.
Much like automobiles, some things change as time goes on.

Buy good proven actions, barrels triggers & stocks do the proper bedding put a tuner on it start the ammo chase & wind reading.
In about 3 yrs things will start coming together.

You would, however, be surprised, a few guys out there that asked questions and actually paid attention got pretty good in 1-1 1/2 seasons .
Unfortunately a lot of’em have to learn everything the hard way.

That actually sounds like a diss ...
I don't know a one that can hold there own in ara psl ir5 in 1yr or 2.
Now to go shoot groups at 100 & 200 that I can believe.

I just started shooting ARA part of the way through this season and holding my own, guess I'm just lucky. I'm still experimenting on the cleaning thing during a match, a couple of wet then dry patches after 2 or 3 cards. It does take 4-5 foulers after cleaning before my rifle settles in

Just got back from a match and don't want to completely hijack the thread but here you go. I started out my first match with a Win 52b that I rarely clean and CCI SV ammo. Acquired an older Gorham built X3 with some good ammo and didn't clean during matches. Ran out of the good stuff and floundered with a mix of cheap stuff still not cleaning during the match. A fellow competitor had pity on me and sold me some of his older stash at the same time started to do a light clean every other card. Managed to win the state tournament last month, a tournament yesterday and 2nd today. I'm still learning but light cleaning seems to be beneficial and quality ammo is everything...

I've placed 1st - 5th in a buncha "outlaw" informal matches against some good competition, but I really need to do some ARA sanctioned matches to see how I measure up.
