Carbon remover

Anyone ever try using permatex spray on gasket remover for carbon removal? I had a old dirt bike piston kicking around that had real heavy carbon fouling on the top and just to see how effective my current carbon remover was I wetted a small area with it and let it sit for a few minutes and tried rubbing it off with a patch. It hardly even touched it. I also tried wipe out and sweets and had about the same result. I had the permatex on the work bench and decided to see what it did and sprayed a small area and only let it soak for half a minute and I could wipe the carbon off right to the bare metal with ease. It turned it to a paste in short order.

That's one big can of it that's for sure lol. At one time I tried to find it but seems hard to come by. Even tried local GM dealer. That GM stuff must be something wicked cause wipe out and sweets compared to the permatex gasket remover was not even in the same league for removing carbon on top of the piston I messed with. Just not sure I want to test it out inside my Krieger barrel yet.

That bubbly gasket remover is some nasty stuff. The gm top engine cleaner was legendary but they stopped making the good stuff. Sea foam is closest

yup. Sea Foam Spray is the stuff. Originally it was sea foam deep creep. The stuff with the red lettering on the can. The new deep creep has green lettering and is mostly oil. A call to the factory in Minnesota told me that thanks to the state of California they were forced to change the formulation of the deep creep. However the man said, the sea foam spray is the same formula as the old deep creep, which is the same as the liquid sea foam. I haven't tried the liquid for rifle cleaning but the spray works very well. By the way it seems to loosen rusty nuts/bolts almost as good as Kroil.

An illusion. It's only a small 15oz can. That is the old TEC, great stuff. Lot of the old times will tell you that. The newer GM TEC is nowhere near as good.

I have the old TEC. and none will equal WartHog 1134, KG1 is the next best available now and i find it a distant second along with old GM TEC. If you need to soak it to get results it isn't worth talking about. jim

I like all my KG Industries products... I called them once and they have one guy their that will talk your head off about gun lubes and cleaners.. Nice folks!!

I think im gonna try the permatex in my 22 250 and see if it still shoots. Seriously, I really don't think their is much that could top this stuff but might be a little to aggressive. Who knows but maybe it will dissolve that pesky carbon ring. No doubt it will dissolve rifle stock finishes.

Do you have a Borescope ? The gasket remover will attack some elements in barrel steel especially if 416 SS . But it's your barrel . If you don't have a Borescope you'll be experimenting blind .

You guys that love GM Tops Engine Cleaner should try KG3 Solvent and Degreaser.. It reminds me of GM Tops or some brake parts cleaners I've used in the past for cleaning parts.. It dries very fast in the air on the part being cleaned.. I'm just curious if you guys whom used GM Tops will find this exactly the same in effectiveness?? After I run KG3 down my barrel once carbon that I thought I had gotten out makes it's presents known.. I think you GM Top Engine Cleaner guys will like KG3... I know you will!!!

I don't have a bore scope but wish I did. I was going to run three gasket remover soaked patches through the barrel and then dry patch till patches are clean. Then run a new bronze brush through a few strokes and then see what comes out on a patch. Ill leave a few drops of the gasket remover on the outside of an old take off barrel I have around and see if it leaves any etching or marks. Or how about someone with a bore scope want to give it a try on an old carbon fouled barrel? Probably not ill bet lol

Nothing better than GM top engine cleaner mixed in with some Kroil.
I mix it at 25% Kroil. Some swear by 50/50, some say 1/3 Kroil. I don't know except 25% has always worked fine for me. I am hoping that the number of cans I have left outlive the rest of my days.

Regards.....

I still say the best carbon remover that will not harm steel is good old fashioned high pressure steam. Nothing works better. Find a way to make an adapter to fit in the chamber and shoot steam through the barrel. Just be sure to oil it after.

Where do you get a portable boiler?
