carbon on case neck...easy removal

the two things i dislike most is annealing and removing the stubborn carbon on case necks. since i bought an annealeez machine, annealing is a pleasure. removing neck carbon is a major PITA. i would spin the case with one hand while holding it tightly with 4-0 steel wool and they would come clean. my vibratory cleaner did not get it off. after doing 100 on night i awoke in the middle of the night with pain in my forearm. motrin and time and i was better, but i decided to find a better way to clean that stubborn ring/ smudge of carbon. several procedures were tried, but i settled on this one. using a sinclair case mouth deburring tool holder i inserted a tightly fitting piece of foam(i tried several materials) with the end just outside of the device. took a 1 square inch piece of 4-0 steel wool held it against this foam and pushed the case neck into the tool holder until the steel wool was held by the foam and spun the holder in a variable speed b&d drill mounted upside down in a vise. 3-5 seconds and the neck was VERY CLEAN and even the shoulder was shining. there is some oxidized brass on the neck/shoulder after annealing and this comes off nicely with this gizmo. i can clean 20-30 cases before the steel wool gets dirty. a snug fit of the case into the steel wool/foam is necessary. i'v tried for 45 min to get pics but no luck. will try again later.

Scotch brite fine works good .Larry

Just like cleaning it from the bore is easiest while the barrel is still warm from the day's shooting,the carbon on the case mouth wipes off with a plain rag if you get to it soon after firing, likewise running a nylon brush inside the neck at the same time. I find attacking carbon before it "attaches itself" to pay off in dividends.

Any any carbon cleaner on a rag work great before tumbling Larry

ShootDots mentioned KrazyKloth in a thread much like this one that I was asking that there had to be a better way than straight steel wool. I order one to try and have been using it ever since. It's takes no pressure and it seems the dirtier that cloth gets the easier it cleans. It does require me to wipe it off with a dry cloth afterwards or the brass gets to looking bad. But I'd rather wipe a piece off with two cloths as I would use force with steel wool.

Not sure I've ever thanked him...but I appreciate the info everytime I shoot.

Final thing...it isn't dependant on time...I did brass that sat 10 days from the day I shot it and it was just as easy to clean as if it was the same day. I also never tumble a piece of brass...just an unnecessary step for me.

lp,,,I usually load my ammo within a few min. of fireing ,,,but even with trusty ole' deer huntin loads I use the green scotch brite,,,it gets up kleen in seconds ,,,,be shure to watch the sine wave on the necks,,,it tells the tale about your loads,,,Roger

You JUST thanked me! I use the Krazy Kloth while I am shooting a match. I shoot, eject the spent case from the chamber, WIPE clean with KK and a rag (both next to the JoyStick), replace back into the cartridge box>>>ALL in advance of the target reappearing from being scored by the target puller! Then, once I get home, I anneal the CLEAN brass and throw in my case vibrator with "about" 70 pct treated walnut media and 30 pct treated corn-cob media for a few hours and out come NICE CLEAN and annealed brass! Easy as pie!! >>>Thanks Judd!

++++

This is a given when shooting point blank group matches where you load between relays. However, I still clean the necks right after firing them and leaving the line when shooting preloads at other disciplined matches. Makes life a lot easier.

Regards....

i have tried most of the mentioned techniques but they are still done by hand. i have a painful wrist ad twisting is the most painful. i wanted an automated process and using this device cleans a neck in 3-4 sec, and pain free.2016-02-11_09.10.14[1].jpg 2016-02-11_09.12.31[1].jpg

Well then the closest thing I can think of is, is to chuck-up a case in the Sinclair Caseholder for neck turning brass and use Krazy Kloth, holding it in place and let the drill do the spinning. The KK takes almost NO PRESSURE to wipe clean. Other than that, I do not know.

I started using KG-1 and man does it make life easy. after I shoot just put some on a rag and carbon just gone. if you do them same day you shoot it is way easy. I clean same day as I wait for barrel to cool. this is the best way I have found and brass looks brand new.

Krazy Cloth has always done a better job for me than Never Dull. PPC case necks that have 40+ firings look cleaner than fresh turned.
