carbon cleaner

It will work as long as you don't have a case of severe carbon fouling. I just went thru a bad carbon fouling cleaning program on my 6AI. I found that the Holland Witches Brew worked the best after trying more than a few others. I guess what I am trying to say is don't let it get to that point. I have now restocked my bronze brush collection after trying the no brush clean method on this particular rifle. It was carbon fouled after only 162 rounds. It's back to where it should be now. I would also recommend KG-1.

Strange enough, it is the best product i have found to date. I saw one of my shooting buddies today I had told about it, and thats all he wanted to talk about was how much easier and faster the stuff worked over Butches.

I have used the Bore Tech Eliminator on CU and it is the best.

My recommendation for carbon is Slip 2000 and a bronze brush. I use it on a regular occasion and it keeps the carbon out. Wet the bore with a patch, then wet a brush and give it 10 strokes. Let it sit for 1/2 hour, give the stuff a chance to work.

It is a surficant and gets under the carbon and loosen's & lifts it out.

Thing is that Bore Tech Eliminator seems to cut powder fouling very well. When tested side by side with other bore cleaners, in a sectioned case it removes more powder fouling than any other bore cleaner I have used, Butches, Shooters Choice and Hoppes.
I just read on their site that it can be left in the barrel safely, anybody tried it? I'm just not sure it will cut the carbon ring but I guess I'll find out. BTW, I have used Witches Brew and yes it is very effective on carbon, I would like to find something to leave a little protection behind so It doesn't become a full time job to remove.
I like some others have a small chemical lab in bore cleaners and would like to keep just what is effective in cleaning bores and be done with the rest.

KG-1, or if you can find it GM-TEC (GM top engine cleaner)
Along similar lines, this stuff works great - Mercury/Quicksilver power tune

(I have bought from this guy in the UK, but I'm sure you can find it in the US)

If you are trying for the carbon, try Sharpshoot R Carb Out. It is perhaps the best carbon cleaner I have ever used! That is the same company that makes Wipe Out. Carb Out goes on a patch and then you run it through the barrel. Man does it push the junk out and I mean no waiting. Then I follow up with Wipe Out to remove the copper.

Carb out is one of the products on my bench now that is collecting dust. It works good on the powder fouling from the days shooting but does nothing on an existing carbon build up.

I found that a bronze brush was needed to make it work, as well as some soaking time. Did you use it that way?

I found Lucas engine cleaner at Auto Zone, says it eliminates carbon build up. Worked it in the bore with a bronze brush, let it sit all night, clean it out next day and carbon was gone.

I did not, It may be worth a try though. I called Bore Tech this week and spoke with their cust. service person, found him to be very knowledgeable about what I was up against with the carbon issue. They are coming out with a new product that will remove heavy carbon build up in the throat area. Unlike J-B that will always come out of the bore dirty ( even with a clean bore )this product will come out clean when the bore is clean which should lend itself to not over cleaning the bore.
Once the carbon build up is removed I am going to be keeping a closer eye on it so it doesn't become the chore it is now.

Kroil and J-B's works the best for me. I have a chemistry lab of barrel cleaning products I've tried over the years until Jim Borden steered me to Kroil and J-B's. I'm not sure what anyone would need a cleaner to do that the Kroil/J-B combo won't do. They take out any copper, any carbon and have no adverse effects. Don't let the "never comes out clean" problem worry you with J-B's ... the second patch with Kroil after the J-B's will be clean. Also, I no longer have a bore brush of any type on the premises, except for the nylon one I use inside case necks.

Hi Reed,

If you don't mind I would appreciate a "How I do it" outline. Do you just wet the bore with Kroil then work with J-B ?

Thanks, Longone

I think i tried them all in my 50 yrs. shooting and a forum member put me on to a product that beats the rest hands down. Warthog 1134,cleans a rifle in 15 min. end of story.............jim

I am trying out a product called Gunzilla. Used it a bit last summer and was pretty impressed. Not definitive yet, but looks like it may be the ticket for me. This was used mostly in an AR match rifle, which seemed to 'run better' and clean easier after the first couple uses.

Has anyone tried this: Bore Tech C4 Carbon Remover. Results good or otherwise. Thanks, LG

I've tried Bore Tech but was never satisfied with the results. The only product that has my vote for a carbon cleaner is JB BORE CLEANING COMPOUND.

I know everyone will say you shouldn't do this,... but it works.
(and yes,... I have used about every chemical available supplied to me as industry samples)

When in the past I have found a barrel of mine or a customer's with chronic/terminal carbon build up, I swab it with Barnes CR10. I will let it set for up to an hour, (and yes I know that is longer than you are supposed to leave it.) and many times you will see very dark brown/black/reddish particulate streaks on the patch when clean the bore after soaking. This streaking will stop, generally indicating the worst of the build up has turned loose from it's substrate. clean with kroil and brushes afterwards.

Never heard of the above, who sells it?
