Altimeters work on this principle!!! They are extremely sensitive scales!! The further you move away from the earth, the less that body weighs, but the mass will stay the same!!! Pitot tubes measure the pressure which gives the speed of aircraft!! The altimeter measure the gravitational force which give the altitude of the aircraft!!!

Sorry, to clarify, I understand anything is lighter the further away from the center of the earth. There are some specific metals that change at unexplainable rates compared to other metals, like steel.
I got it!!! Certain elements are highly polar!! Lets pour a flat of metal that contains polar elements! When the metal is molten, polarization (alignment of electrons) can occur with the earth's magnetic field and hold that orientation until it is frozen when the metal cools and becomes solid!!!

The earth's flux density gets stronger the higher up in altitude (to a point) and the closer to the poles!! The magnetic field is around the earth, not coming from the earth, except at the magnetic poles!!! The shape of the magnetic field is called a toroid or donut shaped! Depending on the orientation of the flat, the flat could weigh more or less!!!

Same principle used for microwave ovens!! Electromagnetic (invisible light) waves are switching polarity in the microwave frequency (Radar frequency were the 1st ovens) much like AC current switching from positive to negative cycling at 60 Hz. Water is a polar molecule and is in the food cooking in the oven!!! The water molecules turning and aligning with the microwave frequency, generating heat in the food!! This technology was developed by accidents in the military using radar!!! Microwave heats the food faster with less power than radar!!!

The pitot-static system has two pressure sensors - The airspeed indicator which reads differential pressure between the pitot (ram) air pressure and the static air pressure (measured 90 degrees to the direction of flow at the static port(s)). The altimeter is a barometer that reads the static pressure.

We test the static system and altimeters with the airplane sitting on the ground by reducing the pressure in the static lines.

You will have to trust me (been doing aviation for 36+ years), or actually look it up for yourself.

Just read it for myself. One type works with the air pressure, another uses radio transition/receiver!! My studies were 50 years ago and I might be thinking of the accelerometer which can also be used for altitude!!!
 
Man there is a pretty heated discussion on physics going on over a rainbow colored chamber! My first thought as a carpenter looking at Aaron’s fist post was, I wonder if there’s a pot of gold at the other end :)
This discussion made a left turn when Aaron, the OP, was asking why certain metals lose weight at different elevations!!!

Aviation altimeters (the only type I'm familiar with) work on pressure differential- nothing to do with gravity.
Stack of aneroid wafers with an internal pressure of 29.92 Hg that expand or contract depending on the static air pressure introduced from outside the aircraft.

Off subject but I always believed the reason people promote a “dull” chamber is because they can’t cut a smooth one. I cut smooth chambers without scratches that need hidden. Never had a bolt thrust issue.
