Canting rear sight base

Hello, has anyone here tried canting a side-mounted rear sight base on an X-C rifle? It seems a shim or wedge would do the trick.

Hello faraim,
Did you think on how you would cant the front sight block to perfectly match the canting angle obtained by using a shim on the rear sight?
I'd like to know if you have an answer because I own a Remington action that has the receiver drilled/tapped for a side mount like the Redfield type. My front sight mount is drilled into the barrel.

I also think that bolt handle clearance might be an issue.

Let me know.

Hello , I have a barrel with the end turned down to .750 for a barrel band. I believe the band can be rotated, but haven't tried it yet. With screw holes I suppose more could be drilled a few degrees off center, but a more elegant solution would be to have someone turn down the end of your barrel. If i had a milling machine I would attempt to make my own. As far as the bolt handle clearance goes, some sights have more room on the
handle side than others. Good luck.

faraim,
Does your sight mount directly on your receiver or does it mount through an adaptor, similar to the Warner side-mount adaptor?
If your cant requirement is small, then you could try using bedding compound as a seating agent to shim your rear sight.
It has been used to properly align scope bases when there are alignment problems.

Just my .02 $ CDN !!!

Kendog, I am thinking about canting the rifle to fit me as I have had shoulder surgery and just ain't as spry as I used to be.

One thought I had with a receiver mounted sight was to make a cut (on the side you wish to cant towards) roughly 3/4 through the mount material, bent it to the desired angle and have it welded. Not adjustable but simple and inexpensive.
There was a classified last week from Trevor Hengehold (US Palma Team member) who was selling his Palma rifle (which sold) as well as a 10 deg. canted sight mount made by Warner. I believe he wanted $50 for it. I believe the post was on the U.S. Rifleteams/Long Range site.
I, too, was going the canted route - discovered that for the 5-10 deg. I was canting I merely rotated the front site iris so that the bar was level when in position and left the rear sight. Once zeroed (about 2 moa to one side) my adjustments were still working for the most part. In the end I made an adjustment to the angle of my hand stop that made the rifle feel better in the level position. Don't ask why, I can't figure it out either!

I am too also going this route. I shoot a Tube gun with a Top mount base. Scott Medesha makes a cantable rear base so I will be using this next season. I took this rifle to Australia and Spirit of America. When I shot team Matches it made the Coaches crazy not having my zero with the Screw straight up at 12:00. Withthe cant that I had i had it zero'd for 800 900 1000 so that i was no more than 1/2 MOA at 800 yard line and perfect at 1000. Well Fullbore you shoot all the way down to 300 yards. That proved to be alot of changes to my No wind Zero.

On my XTC course rifle i dont have a issue as i only move the Right sight two notches and same for my Palma Rifle. onlt two notches on a Palma Match. And no change on my 1000 yard rifle as it only gets shot at that distance.

I wonder if using a Base that mounts ON TOP of your reciever will work for you or will it be too HIGH and change all your positions.??
