Can’t sleep, bad idea: .206 Win Mag

Late night internet rabbit hole that started with the 25-20 and ended up with an idea: expand on the 256 win mag concept but neck down to .20 cal.

I imagine going from .357 mag brass to .20 is not possible and .256 brass is rare but who knows.

What problem does it solve? None that I know of. What problem does it create? More than none.

Best case scenario: 20 Vartarg Rimmed.

Worst case scenario: cost of custom dies, custom reamer, custom barrel, a bunch of brass you have no use for, Burnt powder and bullets, and some wasted time.

Anyone ever wanted to prairie dog hunt with a falling block?

Just to entertain the thought, I did some modeling in Quickload...

Out of a 24" barrel...
35,000 psi,
you'd be looking 3,100 fps with 30 / 32 gr bullets,
and 2,800 fps with 40 gr bullets.

At 45,000 psi, 3,300 fps with 30 / 32 gr bullets, and
3,000 fps with 40 grainers.

The velocity estimate is the average from at least a dozen different popular powders. Some powders showed at extra 70 fps over the speeds above.

That performance is not bad at all considering it's burning between 14 and 17 gr of powder.

Powders in the burn rate vicinity of H-335 / w-748 / 4195 / N120 would work good.

Using virgin 357 and some annealing it could be done using available dies.
I made a pile of 256 years back for a gent that built a lever gun in one.

A couple of years ago I necked down some 44 mag to .312. A royal pita.
Steve Herrett necked the 44 down to 22 on a bet years ago. I forget what the performance was in line with out of a Contender. Brass life was short, but he didn’t have the cool tools we do today either.

357DW or 357 max is where I would look for brass. You won’t have the capacity of rifle brass because of the thickness difference.

Full custom, I would look at a 20 Bee, though I myself would be more interested I lined to go with the 32-34 grain bullets.

The old argument of weight vs speed, came up the last dog trip with me and my shooting bud. The 32s and 34s were doing a lot better in the wind than the 40’s.

Howdy !

Some have wildcatted .357Max down to .224" cal, and it was basically a " .222 Rimmed " .
Neck down from .224" to .20" cal would be pretty straight forward, IMHO.

I think .222 Rem dies were used for forming/loading the .224' cal wildcat mentioned above.

With regards,
357Mag

Wouldn't a 22 Jet do just about everything you want with none of the downside?

I had a Jet in a 6" S&W revolver. It normally gave extraction problems if the chambers were not kept spotless. I was glad to get rid of it. Plus, it's butt ugly! Maybe it would be an even worse idea to consider the 5.7 FN if you want small case capacity. But, if you built a Vartag, you wouldn't have these dreams any more?

Why not use 223 basic brass from Starline. 1.8" length vs. 1.61" super mag. Kind of like a 204 Ruger but with a rim.
