Can't find varget? Try this..

While I'm still in pretty good shape with my Varget supply(Thanks Chris!!), I've been looking for other options(besides RL 15, which I love, but it's really dirty)...While at a gun shop in Ohio, I ran across 8lbs of IMR 4320...never even heard of it, much less tried it...getting ready for several upcoming mid-range shoots, I loaded 5 rounds with the 4320 to the exact same spec's as my winning Varget loads..6Dasher, 32.7grs, Wolf SMR primer, once fired brass, Berger Hybrid 105 jumped 50thous...Got a nice result! This was shoot during the middle of the day, mirage bad, scope set to 25X..... Going out again this evening to verify this load, but it looks like IMR4320 is a direct, maybe even replacement for Varget...plus, the pressures are lower as its just a tid bit slower burn rate than Varget.

This gun has always shoot under 2" at 600 yards, and most of time shoots 1.5"- 1.7", with a small group every so often..

Here is the results at 600 yards..

That is a powder I have never used either. Imho varget is not cure all for all shooting. While it is a versatile powder there are others that will work just as good in most cases that I have run into. If the rumors are correct ,then varget may only come over here in dribs and drabs anyways.

An oldy but a goodie. It was my go to powder in my .17 Rem.. Still got several "brown" tins of it.. Good info Jim, would have never thought of trying it in my BR's.

Here are some QL numbers...

IMR 4320 - Heat of Explosion - 3890 Burning Rate Factor - .5920

Varget - Heat of Explsion - 4050 Burning Rate Factor - .6150

Reloader 15-Heat of Explosion - 3990 Burning Rate Factor - .5200

My load - 32.7grs of powder, Wolf SMRP, Once Fired Brass, Berger Hybrid jumped .50thous(Bartelin 30" .237 1:7:8 - 1:8:3 twist)

IMR 4320 - 59,100psi 3024 fps

Varget - 61,116psi 3029 fps

RL 15 - 59,778psi 3055fps

H 4350 Heat of Explosion 3760 Burn Rate Factor 5130 61,380 psi 3082 FPS. 36.3 gr with 41gr water capacity .2.458 ol . This is what I have found to work best.
Good Shooting Larry

I was using imr4320 in the mid 70s in my .222 rem, darned great powder & never had a load that was not accurate from the 222 to 30-06 w/ that powder.

A fine powder overshadowed by the" nouveau wave of gotta have the newest " make me a better shot powders. Try 4320 in a 22 250, what a well kept secret...Meters very well and a flexible alternative to many of the hard to find powders so much in demand.

4320 was my go to powder in my 223 for many many years,it and winchester 55 gr soft point bulk[the cheapest bullet I could buy at the time] accounted for 1000's of prairie dogs, coyotes and anything else that needed shooting.I still use it in some 223 loads and am very happy with it still.

I am curious to see how it holds up against Varget in temperature sensitivity?
It looks very promising in the Dasher. How clean does it burn?

Thanks,
Ryan

I've been using it in a 308 for several years. I tested it in a Dasher but went right back to Reloder 15 for my my Dasher loads.
I think it is very sensitive to temperature and always waited till the last minute to load my ammo with a close eye on the weekend forecast at the range.
Works perty good for 155gr Palma and 168 Hybrid my 308.

IMR is temp sensitive HODGDON is a extreme powder and is insensitive Larry

What are your sources for this statement? Experience? Manufacturer's claim? Just curious. TIA. :) WD

I'm shooting 4320 in my dasher 34.6gr 105 hybird buggyholes at 100 but I have to back it down it's way hot, heavy bolt lift and primers are flat, gonna back it down a full grain or 1.5 grains
