Can't Beat H4198 for the Vartarg...

Life started out for this gun as a CZ 527 MIP. The last new one in stock I could find at the LGS when they were discontinued in 2022. Pulled the 223 rem barrel off and sold the stock. Had is re-barreled with a 22" Pacnor Barrel 11 Twist to Match a CZ varmint contour. After 1+ year of searching, finally found a MTR stock. Put a Meotpa Optika5 5-20x50 on top (As a side note, the optics on this scope are amazing, every bit as clear and bright as a Nighforce and tracking is very good).

Using Nosler 17 fireball brass neck turned. Also tried several 222 rem brass formed and they worked fine, the nosler brass was easier to form and more consistent. Tried the Sierra 32gr Blizkings with AA2200, LT30, IMR 4198, X-terminator, and R7. They all shot .5 moa, none shot better than .35 moa. Moved to the Nosler 32 Varmageddon bullet which is able to seat deeper in to the brass and still be at the lands. Tried the same powders and this time consistent .35moa groups, with none better than about .3moa. Not bad, but not good enough.

Then my lucked turned 2 weeks ago and found H4198 on the shelf of my LGS. Had my seating depth dialed in and loaded up groups 17.6 to 18.4 in .2 increments. All shot better than .3moa with the 18.0gr coming in well under .2 moa. Loaded up some more to confirm and sure enough 18.0gr in new brass doing multiple .15-.2" 3 shot groups at 100 yards with 3640fps average. Target shown below is with a variable 5-10mph headwind which I was shocked with the results. I thought this little 32gr bullet would have been blown around more. I finally found my load.

Went 12 for 12 on my first 12 shots from 200 to 350 yards. As this is not the varmint forum will spare the rest of the varmint report which I posted in the Varmint forum. I tried several powders, but this load never really reached accuracy potential until I shot it with H4198.

another powder is Hodgdon 300BLK. It shoots in all the 221 fireball cases. From 17 to 30.
But dont tell anyone cause it will get like 4198

We once had a guy on this forum who had done quite of work with the 20VT and he
advised me that H4198 was the stuff with the VT and the 32 & 39 grain Blitz King.

These were fine combinations that I think would work nicely in the dog towns and
other accuracy related efforts. A person who'd dedicate some time with the VT would
probably see some impressive results.

Quite a few shooters seem to like the H4198 but I have always gotten better results with AA2200. As you can see different strokes for different folks. Also, the ball powders are a lot easier to throw for volume reloading.

There are other options too. My Cooper 38 original barrel and new barrel both shoot great with 32 vmax over 21.8gr H335. REM 7-1/2 primer is the best. It’s a hot one, approach with caution, and be careful not to leave in the sun.

When Cooper was in Montana (the good 'ol days), the factory used H335 for their test loads for the 20VT.
All those one-hole targets sent out with the rifle were shot with that powder.

Great group. Looks like 18.0gr is a solid number for H4198 with 32gr. I shot another 5 shot groups with my setup a couple days ago with 4 inside of .2", but of course, I get excited and my 5th shot brought it out to .35".
