Can I use the 50gr Sierra Blitz 1340 through my .223 1 in 8 barrel?

The 50 Blitz (not Blitz King) was the first bullet I used for hunting in my 222 Rem, Model 700. This bullet was designed for the 222 and 223 Rem with conventional twists since it has a thin jacket and is explosive. It is an outstanding bullet in 14" twist 222's and 12" twists 223's.

I will quote from the Sierra Manual, "Designed for Frangibility upon impact, these lightly jacketed bullets should be used ONLY in "conventional" twists" barrels. Their use in fast twist barrels can result in bullet disintegration in mid-air."

Velocity can play a factor, as with more speed, the more heat generated on the jacket
velocity only applies to the extra rpm it can have. The rpm is the limiting factor. Thats why they say conventional twist. If a bullet in a 14tw at 4000fps has 206,000 rpm and survives then that is about max. But in a 8 twist it may have 360,000rpm.

I have several Ar's with 1-8" twists and shoot 40-55 grain V-Max, Ballistic Tips and Blitz Kings for prairie dogs with zero issues. All have thin jackets for rapid terminal effects but shoot fine, even in very hot barrels. I have stayed away from the Hornady SX due to their extra thin jacket, similar to the original Blitz with the Ar's but they are sure fun in a Sako 222

I've shot a great deal of inexpensive 50 grain cup and core bullets from various manufacturers in my 1-8 twist tubes and never had bullets blow up. You shouldn't have any problems.
