Can I neck size with a full LSD?

I am ordering some 6.5x47L custom die from Harrels. This is the first custom die I have ordered. Harrell’s seems to be a little bit extra careful to get the right size. They requested 2 cases that had been fired 3 times and only neck sized. I only have Redding FL type S bushing die. Can I raise my die up off the shoulder and still get the same results? I hate to buy a neck only die for this function...still new to rifle loading...

When you get your die, with no bushing in the die, the top off, and the die in your hand, and insert a fired case as far as it will go into the die, noting how far the neck of the case comes up into the bushing cavity. That is the amount of neck that you can size without starting to reduce the diameter of the shoulder. If a particular caliber's case body has a lot of taper you have one situation and if not quite another. The length of the neck is also a factor.

If you put a liberal dose of lube on the case you will be able to visually tell what part of the neck the die has sized.

That is real helpful info. I assume I would use my usual bushing for that case for the neck sizing (if I go with using a high positioned die)? The alternative with just using the bullet I could probably do by using just the bushing itself out of the die and push down by hand just enough to know it holds the bullet...I can only aim down where I live:)

Ok so I measured 3 pieces of lapua 30 06 brass 2x fired only ever been neck sized with rcbs FL dies backed out one full turn.
Before measurements .25" up fro base .469
This measurement stayed the same after sizing.
Body shoulder junction .4435 before sizing,
.4430 after sizing.
So yes it will size this location
half a thousandth or basicly adding .00025 extra clearance.
Won’t this still resize the diameter of the case?

In the case of the .30-06 the backed off FL die with light contact at the diameter of the shoulder could actually give straighter sized cases than a conventional or bushing neck die. The 06 has a fair amount of body taper, a long neck, and a shoulder angle that does not bring the case to such an abrupt stop against the chamber shoulder. The shoulder contact could help align the case body to the sized neck. "Normal" neck dies do not do this. The one exception is the one that Redding makes that resembles their competition neck die, or a custom neck/bump die made from a Newlon blank using a chamber reamer.

Boyd, I truly appreciate your knowledge and willingness to explain things.
Maybe just maybe it's why my particular rifle shoots so good. I'm having a fight with myself to FL size for this rifle.

It all depends on how hot your loads are. If you load light enough with that case (neck sizing), you can actually see cases' datum to head dimension shorten after successive shots, and primer protrusion progressively increase (totally dry, unpolished chamber, and dry ammo). If you can get it to shoot well at a pressure that is just above that, so that the case "headspace is just stable, but no hotter, you might go a lot of firings neck sized.
Also, if you have never worked with a custom FL die that fits the chamber perfectly, your reluctance to FL size is understandable, particularly if you only have unmodified one piece FL dies.

SPJ sent me a Willson FL bushing die to get me over the hump, also have one in 6.5cm.
Just assembled a complete set of redding type s in 260, but no customs as of yet.
As for charge weight I'm running 56.4 gr h4350 pushing 185vld's.
I am doing FL with. 002 setback on both .264 calibers, just havent brought myself to mess with the 06' as it is shooting great.

I full length size every time using the Redding Competition Shellholders , you can set case headspace to zero on up , I like to keep it between .0015 - .002 no more or less . Tried neck sizing , bushing dies for different neck tension , found a full length sizing die worked better for me .

For his purposes yes he can, a slight kiss to the neck for tension along with higher end charge weights will work fine. Keep loading till a stripped bolt has a hard crush and send the victims to harrells for a die. Works fine.
+ 1

Works just fine for this project...just need to blow the brass out to match the chamber.
