Can I convert a Jlock bolt?

I am wondering if i can convert a Rem 700SA Jlock bolt so I have a strait spring rather than a Curly one? If so how do i do it? Thanks.

i bought one from david tubb many years ago. probalby need the right fireing tools to change it. dave in wyo

Remington was using only one FP spring in the 700 for many years - a L-O-N-G one. I also replaced all of mine with a Tubb spring, but I believe that I bought them from Brownells.

thanks nichols

The entire firing pin assembly comes out the same and a new standard one can go in its place. I just did this on one I got that I didn't know was Jlock before I bought it.

yeah i take them apart on a regular basis it seems. thought mabie i could convert the jlock but looking a little closer i dont think ill bother with it. thanks

I posted a WTB ad on here and had a new one in my hands within 10 days for about 50 buck for a standard Rem assembly.

I replaced my J-lock with an assembly from Gre-Tan. About $65 IIRC.
ive got one of the gre-tan ones. since ive got a couple jlock firing pin assemblies laying around i thought mabie i could convert one. doesnt look like such a good idea now so ill prob end up going with the whole unit. thanks

I've done this before and IIRC, you can't keep the jlock firing pin. slightly different dimensions to the cross pin. You need the entire firing pin assembly. --Jerry

thanks Jerry-- i was piddling with it more last nite and came to the conclusion like you said its not worth doing it. another thing i noticed, when compressed, the spring on the standard firing pin assembly will curl up somewhat like one on a jlock.

This is a link to you-tube video from Greg Tannel that does a very good job of describing why you should change out the whole firing pin assembly.
Thanks Buffalo---- I have one of the tannel assemblies. it seems to work good. They sometimes have to be fitted so they work with a specific gun. Anyway I never liked the snake in the spring on the jlock and i knew i wanted a strait spring, my whole question was weather i could modify the jlock model and get some use out of them. -- of coarse it can be done but its not worth it to me so i may just be buying another replacement assembly. Something interesting to me is when a replacement like the tannel is compressed when the rifle is cocked, it to has a little snake in it. not as bad as the jlock but its there. what will this effect? i dont know
