leaving tomorrow, bought a scope for friend. Will I have any problem when I arrive? If asked, should I say for personal use? Is it ok to bring into country?
Thanks

I do not recommend that you try this. TrxR is correct

His biggest issue would be getting it into Australia, not out of the US. Not that it's ok to take it out of the US.

Australian Customs Department isn't concerned about what you aren't permitted to export from the States under your US ITAR rules. They are only concerned about what is not permitted to be imported into Australia & rifle scopes aren't prohibited items.

Scopes (sights) aren't prohibited items internationally - only in the States.

Actually rifle scopes are not restricted export items under ITAR.

When I filled out my paperwork to get some items exported out of the USA I put a scope on the list, my exporter emailed me and advised me that if it was included in the paperwork the export permit will be rejected due to rifle scopes not being covered under ITAR.

Given this I phoned him to clarify this, it appears only "military optics" are restricted under ITAR, now you would think a Nightforce or similar would be covered under this, short answer "no" but night vision scopes are.

I had the scope shipped to the exporter anyway as the seller didn't want to ship it Internationally and the exporter sent it without any export permit and I got it a few days latter.

A call to Leupold might might get a quick answer if it's ITAR regulated or not.

On arrival in Australia from the U.S., do they scan your bags?

Uh, er, it's a telescope for looking at the stars.

I understand they aren't prohibited but they still require the appropriate import documentation.

The OP left the country on July 15. Today is July 27. I wonder if he took anyone's advice or just packed it and departed.
