Can a rifle zero a given factory load well, but at 500 yards throw rounds all over?

Referring back to my 6.5 creed and 600 yard trouble. Got the 140 Sierra bullets. Didn’t do any load development. I just put the same charge in as used with the hornady bullet. The groups at 600 went from 6-8 inches to between 3-4 inch. With load development and seating depth I’m sure it will get even better. Bullets matter. Edk

Yeah, I think Sierra makes a pretty good bullet.

For mass produced bullets:

Yellow boxes > Green Boxes > Red Boxes.

I figured the Sierra might do better. I had a factory f clas savage in 6.5-284 that would regularly put 5 in an inch or better at 300 yards. The 140s in that rifle shot a bit better than the 142. Never tried any other bullet because of my limitations of ability. Edk

I agree, except wouldn’t have counted Tom’s bullets as mass produced.

He only has the 6mm VTAC. The others are all hand made.

IMO you're shooting a cartridge that at best is maybe good for shooting snakes and turtles off a log at 100 yards! If you want to shoot .224 bullets get you a 1-7" twist barrel in 22/250 caliber and it'll shoot 80-90 grain bullets very well to 500 yards and beyond! I have one...and it does just that and if a coyote stops at 500 yards...that's the last thing it will do!

I got a fairly calm morning and shot. This is a Savage impulse hunting rifle. Those Sierra 140 gave me a 2.25 inch group at 600. Load development over. Edk
