Can a Break Open Gun be Accurate.

From what I can tell bolt guns rule the world of accuracy. I am curious if a break open gun like hmmm. Maybe a Drilling with one rifle barrel, can these types of guns be bonafide 1 moa or better yet .5 moa guns?

I have had a few T/C Contender barrels that whot very well. A 22 Hornet that would shoot under 3/4" and pull some really good groups on occation.

Yes they can. I have a 223 14" Contender with 4X EER scope that just shoots great. 1" is not a problem. But this thing says it all. http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek055.html

I have a fat bellied friend in Ohio with a 19.5 inch 6br Encore barrel that will make you want to sell your best shooting bolt rifle and buy a Encore.......

At the first ever Long Range Benchrest Pistol Championship matches in Phoenix in 1998 there was more than one TC pistol on the line and they did their owners proud. They didn't win but it was probably due more to the shooters inexperience than to anything else. One of the big disadvatages to TCs, and break open and falling block actions in general, is that they have to shifted or completely removed from the bags in order to reload. Even the finest tuned BR rifle will not perform up to it's full potential under these conditions. But with a good barrel, good loads, and a good operator there is no reason that break open firearms cannot be 1/4 MOA performers.

IMHO break actions just want hold together running the same pressures as a bolt gun. The fancy break actions seen shot by the Safari Shooters are more for looking at than shooting. They rarely see more than a couple of hundred rounds through them in a lifetime. You don't even see any break action 22 rimfires in competition. Ranges would not like all that moving around with a break action. With A bolt action the muzzle is kept down range with a minimal amount of movement. One can remain in position if shooting prone or XC.

I have always been interested in a falling block action.. Back in the late 70s there was a action that hit the market called the Wickliff,sp)they were made in the midwest somewhere. These actions were on the BR circuit for about 3 or 4 years then disapeared. In don't remember them winning any big matches.

Some other may remember those actions?

The reason I asked was I had a little facination with reading about Vierlings.

The one that caught my attention had a .17 HRM under the rib over I think it was 6 or 6.5 Swiss or Swedeish with a pair of 12 gauges on each side. It looked like a drilling since the .17 tube was hiding in the rib. The maker claimed target accuracy with the rifle barrels. I can't afford a gun like that but I read and saw photos on the methods they used to regulate the rifle barrel. The .17 was set where the bullet passed the sight short of 100 yards the second time and the center fire in the 150 yard range with the explanation that when you add a scope the point blank range would be more appropriate.

When I saw the claim of target grade accuracy I had my doubts about that since I thought a break open could not achive that. I guess they can.

I am not sure how practical a gun like that is in real life but it sounds nice to carry your side by side shotgun, rimfire and centerfire rifle in one package.
