Can a b&c stock barrel channel be opened up?

Can a b&c stock barrel channel be opened up?

Generically speaking, yes. It will depend on the barrel channel conformation that you start with.

If so, what are things that might make project go sideways?

Depends on the method used to open up the barrel channel.

Again, generically speaking, if you use a dowel and sand paper very little can go wrong as long as you work carefully and with deliberation.

I've used the Gunline Barrel Bedding Tools for faster scrape inletting. These can sometimes roll over the edge and make marks in the top of the stock. Again, be deliberate.

Nowadays I power inlet on a mill using a rotary base for the angles. Practice on some scrap first.

There is a long list of potential problems which can make a project go sideways. Planning and proper safe set ups will curtail some of these. Sharp tools help immensely.

Enjoy!

Maybe not from Brownells but I've found them elsewhere. This is a good picture of that tool. They have really gone up in price since I bought mine ages ago but they are an outstanding tool when you practice.

;)

Get a 2 foot section of dowel and glue a sheet of 80 grit sandpaper on one end. The rest of the dowel is your handle. You can screw a handle on the front end, too. Make it look like a night stick the Police carry. It will help control the direction and pressure for the front end.

Just finishing one up- a Bell & Carlson LA 700 Titanium ADL model that had to be opened up for a #3 Lilja. I used a dowel, sockets, and even an take-off barrel to get to the proper bbl to stock clearance. Constant fit-up to verify. First time using Pro-Bed - all my previous work was with Marine-tex. Not having used them side-by-side ( last bedding job was 3 years ago) Pro-Bed will be first choice in the future. I like the fact that you buy direct and a good chance the product hasn't set on the shelf for years.
