Calling all RCR 300wsm varminter owners

Hi Guys,
I've procrastinated for far too long on building a 300 Wsm varminter! I have a suitable Barnard P action on hand with McMillan stock, Several bags of Norma brass & just ordered my Redding competition dies from Sinclaires.
The majority of my varminting is in the 300-600yard range, I'm not hung up on BC or having to allow for more wind as a result. What I want is maximum splat & air time! Do I barrel with a 1-16 to 1-17" twist for the lightweights or go 1-13 to 1-14" twist for the 150gr weight for the best carnage results?
I was hoping a fellow 300 varminter owner could offer some advice from their experience.

i went with a rock creek 20 twist with a little gain to it,no problem with pressure but i loaded down to 72.5 gr of n550 to save my brass a little, still getting right at 3900 fps on a model 70 action,at least go with the 17 twist & light bullets

i have owned and built several 300 varminters. I typically find best all around performance for a 30" barrel in 1:15 twist.

You can shoot the 110 and 125's out of it very accurately.

If you are also just using this for hunting varmints put some lead shot in the butt of your stock for counter weight from the heavy barrel.

Ford nut,,,I went a differnt way when skinnin the cat ,,,I chambered a 30-06 AI variant ( 30/280 AI--larger case capacity) which holds aprox 92% powder vol. as 300 WSM...and doesnt need mag. bolt face,,,,with a 17 twist bbl. (28" Krieger HV profile-w/muzzle break) I have good results with 110/115 class BR bullets clear up to Sierra 155 palma!!! who-da-thunk-it !!! ,,,I tried it over and over with several 150 class bullets and they work, quite well....I use 4350 and other propellants in that burn range(Rx-17--N-150--N-550--various BLENDS!!),,,its sorta the same thing only different,,,I hope this helps with your choice of bbl. twist,,Roger

i've been trying to find some additional powders other than n550,tried some rl17 & it was ok,was thinking of trying some of the new lt32 i have since some have had good success with the new 8208

roger, what kind of loads are you using behind the 155 gr?have some 150's here & would like to see if they will stabilize in my barrel

Here is a pic of my Kiff reamer(30/280 AI),,,,I use 30-06 brass but move the shoulder foreward (like a 6 Dasher does the parent 6mmBR) and give more cap. than the typical AI ,which changes the shoulder angle but doesnt move up the neck also. In mine I found 4350 charges aprox. 64gr to be best and similar charge wts. with blends of Rx15/Rx17/Rx22/Rx25 . N-150 and N-550 work well also. I neck the 30-06 brass up ~ .318" ID....then use a 30-06 die moved up .180 from the shell holder to form a false shoulder for FF like some do for the Dasher. I use 55% of case capacity of Universal Clays and 1/4 sq of toilet paper (NO BULLET!!!!) ,,,I have used a bullet jamed hard and a stout 30/06 charge but found that FF without bullet puts VERY LITTLE wear on the bbl. VS using bullets.....hope this helps...PM me if you like and I can give Culver st points and a lifetime of load info that is inappropritate for use here because few internet shooters use my load methods. Roger

PS...I changed the ND to .339" and the FB to .110"(so that I can use the 110-115gr and up 200gr bullets),,,,,my loaded ammo with WW brass is .333" and Lapua is .335"

pretty neat idea! gonna try some 150-155gr today with standard wsm loads for these weight bullets to see if they stabilize in my barrel, will let you know the results!

ooooo,,,,i dont think you have enuff twist for the 150 class bullets,,,,,I hav been wrong before (just once!!) I am very curious and look foreward to your results....I know a 17 tw will do it...but with a 20tw!!!!???? ..this will answer a lot of questions,,,,Roger

just fired 5 rounds ranging from 150 to 155gr palma, limited supply on hand so I couldn't shoot more, all went through the target in nice round holes!no keyholing so I think they stabilized pretty well, accuracy was about 3" so some load development would be a must! kind of amazed because I thought I was limited to the lighter bullets! may have to get some palmas & see what it'll do! :)

groovy,,,,Im pleasantly surprized,,,,they realyyyy work good in my 17 tw bbl,,,good 4 U,,,keep us informed ,,we are all learning from your testing,,,thanks for the info,,,the 'experts' told me they wuldnt work with my 17tw,,,,Roger

will do,have to get some more of the palmas first, have you been able to run pretty hot loads through yours? I think the extra speed would help to stabilize the longer bullets

223,,,one more thing,,,I would shoot more of what you have ,,,before buying $$$ something that wont work..I think your on the edge and the 155's have a higher BC,( around .500??) which requires more twist to stabalize!!! dont want you wasting $$ on something that wont work,,,,what makes me worry is your 3" group,,,,even though the holes lookes good ,,that is a BIG group for 100 yds,,,and I know you have a good rifle....what kind of groups does it shoot normally???...Roger

that 3" group was at 200yds,will definitely have to try more before buying lots of supplies, those were at a HARD jam because of the zero freebore, have to try some seated a little deeper & see what happens, with the 118 bibs it will shoot less than half inch 3 shot groups at 200yds

223...much better at 200yds,,,,Mine has .110 FB and I can jump the bullets ~.050" and have the shank in the remaining .060" to help pilot the bullet into the bore,,,,Mine like jump no matter which bullet!!!,,,Roger
