Caliber choice for 600 yd F class newbie.

Thanks. I work shift so not off every Saturday but will try and make a match just to see firsthand. What is field preciscion rifle?

The FPR rules are attached, but you can show up and shoot F Open or FTR as well. I shoot F Open and rarely miss a match. Come on out when you are not working.

I am not the best shot.(Please, no one needs to back me up on this) But you can be competitive with the 223. I would usually shoot 195's and 194's unless the wind was switchy. I shot my first 199 after going back to my 308. Funniest match I shot I used my 223 and shot 12-X's in a 15 shot course of fire and still managed to place out of the ribbons. Seems I missed a wind change and shot two 7's then a nine. I discounted the first 7 because I was sure my bipod moved at the shot for the first one.

are you sure you don’t need any backup on that lol!! the 223 can win at midrange, but if you get into 15mph plus winds and they start getting switchy on you hand me my 308.

WEL... Show up at Palo Alto on any first or second Saturday at about 07:45am and talk to any of us before a match (F-class/sling 1st Sat./ Field Precision Rifle 2nd Saturday). I have a RPR in 6.5 Creedmoor that shoots very well that you can use for a match if you shoot factory ammo or I can load up some for you if you can wait until March as I will be busy with preps for the Berger's until then. Just show up and observe/discuss and we can get you on the line by the next match most likely. You will meet a great group of fellows....I even include ol' Snuggie among them:D.

The guys at Palo Alto are great. I wished I lived closer so I could shoot there more often. Check the schedule for details, but the 1st Sat most months is an NRA approved F-Class match at 600 yards. Winds at Palo Alto tend to be on the milder side of what I've experienced, so a .223 Rem would be my first choice. The 2nd Sat most months is their FPR (Field Precision Rifle) that is close to F-Class with a few tweaks such as needing to shoot from a more realistic bipod, loading from the magazine, and a peak scope magnification. But they also run a practice F-Class match alongside of the FPR, so you can shoot an F-Class rifle that may not meet the FPR rules in the practice F-Class match on the 2nd Saturday.

Anyway, having the chance to shoot F-Class twice a month is awesome, even though the 2nd Sat is just a practice match.

I second the guys at Palo Alto are great. I have been trying to get into this type of shooting since the end of 2015, I Only got to shoot once last year but had a great time the guys down there answered any question I had they were a big help.
If WORK allows it this year I will get back down there.
