Caldwell 'The Rock' Rest

I'm new here, and to target shooting. I was wanting a decent front rest,so I ordered one of the Caldwell Rock Bench-rest, front rest. Have any of you guy's used one? I know it's not the best, but hope it will work well for my varmint rifles. Thanks Ron

It is a very functional rest for the money. Some people don't like the top because it rotates rather than slides from side to side--but the varmints won't know the difference. The bottom unit, a copy of the Bald Eagle "slingshot" design, works well.

If you ever want to upgrade the top, Butch Lambert sells a nice conversion top. You'll need to swap out the ram or fit a sleeve in the base to use other tops like the Hoehn or Sinclair.

Thank you for the information. I don't really know anything about using a front rest, other than just resting your forearm on them. It looks like there are side plates to "tighten up" the front bag on it,so I guess it will fit different width forearms on rifles. Ron

Seems like I`m in the same boat as you, after stocking up on lots and lots of bullets this year I will be in the market for a affordable rest too. The research I`ve done on the calwell rock br tells me it`ll work but you`ll want to get a better front bag for it, the one it comes with sounds about worthless. For about $150, looks to be the best bang for the buck...

I too was looking for the best bang for the buck just getting started. I read a lot of comments people made about various rests and wound up with the Rock. It's not the best but will suffice for now. My main complaint is that when rotating the elevation wheel there is a cyclic up and down motion caused by the screw not being completely square. I may eventually upgrade with another top.

Lots of people complained about the bag that came with the rest. Evidently Caldwell has been listening. My rest came with a narrow flat bag and a wide flat bag. Those are cheaply made and the ones people complained about. However also in the box was a reasonably good Caldwell cordura bag. They must have added this to later production to hedge the complaints. It was a pleasant surprise.

I have one and it works OK for me.

But I am only playing anyway.

The flat bags that came with mine were only good to spill sand all over the place. Two pieces of junk! I think I will ship the two bags back and "EXPLAIN" how well they work. Might ship them full of sand so who ever opened the package would understand right away!

Yeah,I got mine yesterday, and it came with a extra cordova bag. I can't see how the "flat bag" would work without spilling sand out. Ron

The flat bag has to be filled, preferably taped and then clamped under the long strip on the top of the rest to prevent it leaking or moving. I discovered that the regular Protektor front bags wouldn't allow the tabs that fasten down the bag to fit through the slots in the metal rest top. I just took the ears of the bag and put the brass grommets in a vise and turned it down tight to flatten the little brass grommets. Then they fit right through the slots in the top of the rest and fastened well underneath with wire ties making for a neat installation. If I need to change front bags I'll have to clip the wire tie and install a new one with the other bag which slows you down a mite. I like it that way though. It's a lot neater and sure installation.

I have used both the Caldwell rock and BR. Both are excellent value and work very well.

The windage top on the BR doesn't work with a heavy rifle. My F class rifle is 20lbs and the top will not return because the weight overcomes the spring pressure. I just leave it centered and forget about it. Will eventually put bolts through to lock it in place. I steer with the rear bag.

All the controls tighten nicely and I prefer the larger range of vertical compared to the rock for prone shooting.

The rock has a wider footprint and except for less 'up' functions as well as the BR version. Arguably, the rock is more stable but is lighter.

Knowing what I know now, I would get long legs for the Rock to give me the same elevation adjustment as the BR model. Both are equally rigid in function.

Definitely get protecktor bags. The factory ones don't work for me.

I bought one recently, and to say it is the best....well, can't say that. There are things that I wish were different but, it is a very good rest for the money. There is no way or reason to put it in the class of, just to say, sinclair, hart and others.

Hello!
Do you know, are Sinclair's F-class extended threaded feet and large F.class spiked pawls be the right tread dimensions for Caldwell Rock BR. In catalog there is no tread dimension listed.
Thank you
