Caldwell Fire Control

Has anyone tried the Caldwell Full Length Fire Control for real, how is it's stability etc compared to other rests?

Regards Bjarne

I purchased one a couple of months ago and so far am happy with it. You can adjust the tension on the rest top to what you want and it will hold a F-class rifle without any problem. The only problem with it is the rest top is to short to accomodate a 3' long bag. It can be modified easily or you can adapt a Sinclair RT-3 benchrest top to the base. If you do not need a 3' bag then the rest top that comes with the fire control works. Either way, trash the bag that comes with the fire control and go with a Protektor or Edgewood front bag.

Take a look at this video on the 20 Practical AR done for the 6BR.com website. I am not sure this is what you are referring to but part of the video shows me using a Caldwell Fire Control rest.

Thanx for your post Robert :)

Does a rifle need to be fitted with the bag rider assembly to shoot from the Fire Control rest?

What I need is a good rest when I’m building up hunting loads and would like to eliminate my own errors when test shooting.

I too am looking for info on the Fire Control for this reason.

IMHO the best thing to use to test hunting with is something similar to what you would actually use in the field. If you shoot from a bipod, test with a bipod. If you shoot with sticks, use sticks. For testing for hunting, I want a stable and simple platform. I want to focus on the target and my trigger pull. The moment of the joystick only gains speed in acquistion of the target, but adds to the complexity of operations.

Again, my 2 cents. tiny

I'm looking to have the human error taken out of shooting for load development and sighting a rifle in.

Once I am happy with the results, its back to a bi pod or front bag rest and my own ability. Or lack off.............

Gentelmen, if you own a standard stocked rifle, no 6 position extendable AR-15 types ) then the full length Fire control will work just fine. It offers a very stable platform for load development and plinking allowing the rifle a normal recoil path into the shooters shoulder unlike the lead sled
