Caldwell Ballistic Precision Chronograph

Anybody try one yet? One of the guys in Recob's was talking about one yesterday, you can even connect it to a smartphone using a cable that is included with free software from Caldwell. They did have 3 of them on the shelf

Some info on the smartphone program https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.battenfeld.chrono

The chrono is available online at midway http://www.midwayusa.com/product/626107/caldwell-ballistic-precision-chronograph?cm_vc=ProductFinding

Interesting. I have not tried one, but it may fall into the category of something I would buy and later wind up selling, in order to get what I should have bought in the first place. I have had too many issues in the past with my Chrony regarding sunlight. It is especially troubling during times of the year when the sun is "low in the sky". I now own a Magneto Speed. Problem solved, plus much quicker/easier to set up. My advice would be to buy the Magneto Speed even if requires working a second job. I would only buy one of these to shoot handguns through.

I have not tried this chronograph. But my opinion on chronographs in general, having tried several, is that you get the precision and repeatability that you pay for.

I have a friend who was using a shooting chrony - he was extremely happy with his chrono'd ammo results, since they all showed an extremely low E.S. However, his results on paper were not matching. We ran his ammo over my chronograph as well (in series) and the E.S.... was not extremely low.

I got a magnetospeed in October because my chrony would never read my 17HH, I also noticed the price has jumped $40 on the shooting chrony F1 since I bought mine

I have had 2 PACT for years, one set up in my shop to test loads while I was working up loads, nice here in Yakima in the winter time. The other one was for the range,I built a nice box the hold all the stuff-with spares ,yes you will shoot a couple of sky screens -. Under the poor light conditions you have to keep shooting closer to the sky screen to get a reading. last fall I got my magneto speed, when it came and I opened it up I almost laugh at how small it was. I gave my range unit to a shooting buddy. Bite the bullet and buy a Magnito Speed you will never be sorry, Carl in Yakima

i have one that connects to my phone or iPad. Worked for a while but then no more information thru cord. The only reading you get then is one shot because the unit shows nothing else. Makes me very angry. Reviews show this also. Edk

I used one for years. When you get a reading it is by far the Best Chrono I have used. checks all the boxes.

App is great
Cord usage was just fine never failed.
Accurate
Durable
1 9v battery lasts for ever

The only downside is the downside of all optical chronographs.

1) you have to stop the shooting line to set it up.
2) if the light isn't right, you get wonky readings. Like on super sunny days with no clouds. If the sun is directly on one of the optical sensors and the other is not, you get crazy readings.
3) cannot use on multiple target backers at 100 yards. You have to shoot at the same 24x24ninch area. I'm the guy that hangs a bunch of targets and shoots for hours at a time.

But man that app was the best app I have ever used for a Chronograph. Way better than Garmin.
