As promised here is the follow up from my purchase of projectiles from Reloading International in the States. Again remind everyone that I only did this because I couldn’t source the projectiles locally and admit the reported 1.4 – 1.7 billion rounds purchases in the States by Homeland Security has also had an understandable impact on supply here in Australia and created enough related “conspiracy theories†on the web to fill the free time you probably now have because of the limited supply.
I have been unaware that the US has changed its export laws to make it illegal for ammunition or their components to be exported. (Seems they have also broadened the list of “not for international export†items beyond firearm or reloading components. This may explain why Cabelas don’t have a “.com.au†site anymore too. Should also warn that the big hunting suppliers -Midway, Cabelas, Optics Planet, Brownells etc are very diligent with monitoring their orders and will cancel or suspend orders that appear to be using “on shipping†US addresses or orders received from non USA URL addressed computers (not sure how that works but know they do it as tried several times). They generally also require you to confirm the item being purchased isn’t being on shipped, on sold or to be exported.
I had been exploring numerous options that wouldn’t get me into trouble and had all but given up till I somehow found Mike and Reloading International (www.reloadinginternational.com) in one of my countless web searches. They are able to do what I didn’t seem was possible, legal or even worthwhile and that is organise a US export licence for you. This plus having an excellent range of stock that is also competitively priced deserves some attention. It really was a case of “problem solved!†You still require the B709 for the process but it does work as I have just experienced. You only pay when everything is approved and your order confirmed (including a fee for the export license). They also have an excellent understanding of how our importing and approval process works too.
All shipment are tracked with USPS so you know where it is in the delivery process. My recent order ultimately involved 2 parcels. One was received within the week of shipment and the other stalled at their international exchange for several weeks until I just received a request from the “Detained Goods Management Unit†of our Customs to provide the original B709. A copy was attached externally along with the export license for the US. I suspect my remaining package will be arriving late this week or early next week. The whole process is a lengthy one so give yourself plenty of time to get the B709, them your export license and then time for shipping. Been several month timeframe for me, though I did change my order along the way.
Have been impressed with the Reloading team, though they have been slack with emails of late but know they have been extra busy getting their web page updated along with running their business.
The Oz dollar isn’t worth $1.05 US but it’s still worth doing the numbers to see if it’s worth it or the hassle. We also need to support our local suppliers too, so see this as an option for a special order or when local supplies are a problem. My next order will probably be some Remington and Winchester .223 cases unless my local guys can get something other than the Norma cases.
Safe hunting!
