But hook stock??

Allows one to push the butte into the shoulder for more stability. Your non-trigger hand pushes back into the 'hook'. That hand can also make some vertical adjustment by making a fist (or not). Effectively your off hand becomes a bag-like rest in the field.

Actually the hook is under the armpit and keeps the rifle butt stock from rising, due to the weight that is forward of the left hand primarily while shooting in all 3 positions. Offhand, Kneeling, and Prone.

What he said...but I use mine for off hand (standing) mostly.

Since he referenced the A-5 stock I thought he was meaning the cut-out along the underside of the butt stock of tactical stocks. I agree that the traditional butt hook does fit under the arm pit and is seeing a renewed lease on life lately based upon the MEC offerings coming out lately. Never tried one personally but one is never too old to try.

watercam,
your probably right about the A-5 reference, My mind was on the Butt hooks for rimfire rifles.I am not sure what they call the profile on the stock although I have seen them in use I never asked about them.

I have found that I really don't like THAT design feature of the A-5!! I like to push my stock forward and backward to change elevation via the rear bag. The A-5 is a lot like my 1K BR stocks in that pushing the stock forward/rearward gains you very little elevation adjustment.

I have purchased my last A-5 design!!

The A5 is not designed for shooting off of a bag. It is designed for shooting positions where you typically have some kind of support for the front of the rifle and you are using your hand/shoulder for the back. It works well in it's intended role. In the games played today either F class or practical shooting (love the PRS guys that run to the line with bags and pillows hanging off of everything) where you shoot off of a rear bag it is less useful.

I used one for my first couple of yrs in F-TR and I didn't like it in that application, but I do like it in the field when I don't have a rear bag.

Some of the stock makers that make a wood version of the A5 can make it with out the butt hook. wish mine didn't have it.

Why buy an A5 if you don't want a butt hook? Why buy a tactical stock at all?

Why not buy a McMillan XIT (FTR) or the New Kestros, or the previous F-Class or MBR? Buy a stock with the features you want.

But yes, there are two types of butt hooks, one that is an attachment that goes under the armpit for leverage, and the other is that thumb notch on the bottom of the butt where one can place the webbing between their thumb and forefinger to apply rearward pressure pushing the stock into the shoulder.

I was more so commenting on the guys who commented saying they don't like that feature on their stock...

In my case it was what I had. I like the design for shooting other than off of a bag. Not everyone starts out with a dedicated F-TR rifle.
