Bushnell Elite Scopes?

I have a Bushnell Elite 4200 8-32x40mm on a "short range" paper puncher, would it be usable on a 1000yrd rifle? My fiancee is also eyeballing an Elite 6500 4.5-30x50mm for her coyote rifle (Savage 12 Varmint Stainless .308win), would the 6500 model be better suited?

I'm not at all adverse to buying new scopes, but since we'll HAVE these scopes, are they suitable to use? It'd at least save a little cash that I could spend on a better action, barrel, or stock up front.

You are absolutely right. The 4200 in my book is every bit as good as the side focus. With side focus you dont have the fine control of the clarity of what you are looking at.There is nothing wrong with side focus in general. If you dont mind a scope that doesnt have infinite adjustability. It is hard to describe what I am getting at.I have both types and still prefer the adjustable objective. I love the high end bushnells.I have 4000's,4200's. I dont have a 6500 , but I have looked through them. They are definitely a wonderful scope. As far as I am concerned, bushnell's are clearer and brighter than there competition. This is just my opinion.

I use a 4200 6-24 Tactical with side focus in F Class out to 1000 yds. Have to admit the side focus doesn`t give quite the control over parallax focus as a front focus but I like the scope.

Looked at a 6500 a year ago and noticed that there seems to be something missing in the elevation and windage knobs. There are reference markings on the outside spindle but no matching markings on the inside spindle. The inside spindle is blank. Don`t understand what Bushnell is doing there.

I've got an Elite 4200 8-32x (on a Ruger 10/22) as well and certainly would try using it on one of my 1000 yard guns if I didn't already have anything else. The only real downside is the very limited adjustment range. You'll have to have a mount that has 90%+ of the total elevation your caliber of choice will need to get you on at 1000 yards. I'd try a 20moa tapered base and the 1" Burris Sig. Zee rings with the offset insert kit, then you can change the inserts to dial in the elevation (and some windage if needed).

I don't have a 6500 and have never looked through one. I like my 4200's optics so I was interested in the 6500 because of it's 30mm tube. When they first came out, it seemed like a lot of reviews weren't so positive. It's been a while and I haven't looked since, if you haven't already, I would do some homework (reading updated reviews) before making that purchase. Maybe they're wonderful now ???

Switchbarrel is absolutely correct as far as limited elevation adjustment on the Elite 4200 8-32. I was first hand witness today on my sons rifle when he was shooting at 300 yards, ran out of elevation trying to click up to shoot 300. But the scope's optics are excellent. Will be looking at a different mount system now. :-\
