Burris Sign. Zee new cross bolts

Just received a 30mm High pair,( received the extra high pair last week) that was back ordered from Mid South and low and behold the cross locking machine screw now has a torx head instead of a regular slot for a screw driver. Will have to see if this will torque correctly.

That's good news. Wonder if Burris will make the crossbolt torx head screws available for those of us who want to change out the older slotted heads?

Think I'll call them & put the question to them. I'll take the torx head over the slotted any day.

I would take them starting to fill orders on the signature rings as we have been waiting 2 years to let them set up their new facility.

I have at least 5 sets of the Signature Zee on my F-Class rifles. (6BR-6BRX-243Win-308Win-30BR)
Two years ago I called about one set that had wormed out screw slots from the previous user, and was sent replacement screws at no charge. Don`t think they would replace my cross slot version for the new type. ;)

Regards,

Scott

Scott: No, I'd not expect them to replace them free of charge. I'm more than happy to pay the going rate.

CoverDog: What size torx bit is required for the base cross-bolts? Rings are T-15. Just wondering if the cross-bolts are a larger size.

fudhuster, please post any info you get from Burris on possible replacement cross bolts. Thank you.--Jim

Just placed a call to Burris ( 970) 356-1670, customer tech support, extension 2, explained the report of Torx head crossbolt screws now being available, and that I would like to purchase 12 pairs.

The person I spoke to knew nothing about the Torx head screws being available, put me on hold for several minutes to verify & came back and said all the crossbolt screws are the straight slotted heads, for use with conventional screwdrivers. :(

Me thinks the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is upto ;). Those sneakey productuction guys are always tryin to get somthin goin before Customer service (always the last to know) finds out.......

Roger T: You are correct, the left hand does not know what the right is doing, at Burris. After being told that only straight slotted screws are being used for the ring to base mount, by "customer service", ( I use that term loosely), I just opened a new package of Medium height 30 mm's.

Yup! Screw heads are the T-15 Torx head.

I'll be calling Burris again on Monday & this time will request a supervisor, or anyone who knows what they are talking about.

Great news if they have changed the design to torx heads, recently bought a set of 30mm highs that the previous owner had modified to take M4 allen head screws, much nicer to use... and was going to be modding the other set that I have.

An update confirming Burris have changed the design would be good, even though it does sound like they have. :D

If I remember right, those cross screws didn't have much thread engagement. I drilled my rings out so both sides were thru holes and proceeded to ACE hardware and bought myself some proper length stainless socket head cap screws and acorn nuts. Much more secure than a few threads tapped in an aluminum ring.

Recently received 3 sets of Signature Zee rings. As fdshuster stated, they all have Torx heads on the cross bolts. Much better than the old Slot design. Now to see if we can purchase these Torx head bolts from Burris to replace on the old ring sets we now have?

The Zee rings I have are too flimsy to "torque". The relief slits on either side of the base take a set and make removal from base Very Difficult. The through-bolt is pretty damn flimsy; doesn't even seem to be hardened. Round through-bolt does not bear enough against back of slot, but maybe most are using Weaver slot bases?

Best value in rings I've found is TPS.

Any ring base that relies on compression of both support members, like the Zee, is going to shift the geometry of the ring alignment UNLESS the ring is manufactured with the 65ip load in place before the mount is drilled for tube dimension.

Give me the simpler geometry of a side clamping tactical ring or center clamping of the Leupold QR system.
I really despise Zee rings.

Until another maker has the polymer inserts ... I'll stick with the Burris rings. As far as the slit taking a "set", all it takes is a fine/narrow straight screwdriver or for that matter a putty knife to open. Yes I'd like a more robust ring & have repeatable torque on cross bolt (I do but it's "kinda/sorta")but for the price & ease of mind on having NO torque on scope ...
I must like them have 3 sets on rifles, 1 shotgun & 1 revolver. So far nothing has shaken off due to recoil. I have also installed another 1/2 dz on other shooters rifles & they haven't jumped to anything else ! Still have to call to get the Torx cross bolt srews.
