Bumping the neck

I am loading for a 22-250 and have been working up loads with brass 5-6 times and my cartridges are getting a little hard to close the bolt on. Should I bump the necks or full length size occasionally? what would be the best way to maintain accuracy. I use this for Varmint hunting and dont turn necks or anything extreme I use Redding standard neck dies and have Redding F\L dies. any tips here would be appreciated.

Take the FL die and screw it ALMOST all the way in. Size a case - it should still be tight.

Then start turning the die in 1/32nd of a turn at a time, and sizing a case. Do this until a case fits they way you want.

Some, including myself, prefer the cases ti be a little tight, some prefer them to go in easily - take your choice.

when the case fits like you like, lock the setting on the FL diem and do all the cases.

Enjoy!

You can do it by feel as Catshooter suggested, but I'd recommend that you get some measuring tools. There are a number of tools for measuring the length of your case from the base to a point on the shoulder such as the cartridge-specific tools from Wilson and RCBS, and several generic tools like the Stoney Point or Sinclair models. With these tools, you measure an unsized case and then adjust your die down until you've pushed the shoulder back from .001" to .002".

I've had a couple of times where the "feel" method lied to me,due to something unrelated to headspace) and I pushed my shoulders back farther than necessary.

Just so there's no confusion, when catshooter said "screw it ALMOST all the way in", he meant; turn the die until it just about touches the shell holder.
You should actually bring it down until it touches the shell holder then retract it back 1/16 of a turn.

keep turning the die down in 1/16" increments until the bolt closes easy.

Catshooter gave me the exact same information just two weeks ago and it worked out great.

good luck

I prefer the Forester/Bonanza neck sizer to push back the shoulder as a "bump" die, I use them in all calibers.

I have cut my full length sizing by 1/5th by using the "bump" die.

I like to have a dedicated die to bump the shoulders with instead of a partial full length die, because I do not have to lube cases, etc.
