Bumping shoulder

How can I bump the shoulders when I have a Small base die and I already have the shell holder camming against the bottom of the die?
Shave the base of the die
I use a cut off wheel on a grinder, since a cut off wheel is smooth on the side and doesnt gouge it like a rough grinding wheel will
Soft pressure.
measure OAL of the die, shave little at a time, maybe .010" until you get what you want

Some guys use comp shell holders that are shorter
I personally dont mind shaving my die if I need more bump
the Die does not need to contact the shellholder to accomplish it's task

Could you please provide me a link to these competition shell holders that are SHORTER?

I have not used these so L.Sherm may be correct in that they are taller.
Like I mentioned, I find it easy to simply trim my die
(Plus they are easy to chuck in a lathe and trim) Shellholders are pretty hard
Plus trimming the die removes some of the chamfer by doing so at the beginning of the die entrance
which effectively sizes more of the case length.

I suppose you could do both
Trim your die, then use the comp shellholders if they are taller by +.002" each to tune it in
if you feel you need to feel shellholder contact with the die
I prefer not to bump the shellholder into the die and stress the press

I get tired of people recommending these taller shell holders that most definitely will make the problem worse. There’s so much anecdotal misinformation on this forum anymore, it’s ridiculous.

Yeah well I dunno why people cant just trim their die.
it is likely the die thats the issue, (chamber cut a few thou too deep, die a little long etc)
more than a problem with any shellholder.
But, like I said, some people think they need to bump the die with the shellholder
so....trim the die -.010, then accompany a custom bump depth with the + shellholders set

Now lemme ask, is the Comp shellholder actually taller overall or....
is it the surface that pushes up on the head of the case taller? (raise the floor, effectively then
the FLOOR, to the TOP of the shellholder would be SHORTER) same as someone grinding the top of their shellholder down.
then they should work to bump more, right?

Because like others have said, I dont see how a well known company like redding would put out something useless that would result in actually bumping less

You're right, that appears to be what Redding has done- marketed shellholders that reduce headspace by lowering the floor (to get a longer base to shoulder dimension). They say it makes the process precise by eliminating "error" from backing out the die. The solution for a tight chamber would be to grind the bottom of the die or the top of the shellholder, the opposite of what the comp shellholders do.

I personally would modify a shell holder if I found I needed more setback at the shoulder datum. I'd use abrasive paper on a flat base such as a piece of scrap granite counter top. Monitor the amount of material removed until I got where I wanted to be.

There is more than one way to reach this goal. Not claiming mine is superior. Just makes the most sense to me and my way of thinking.
