Bullet source for .228 Ackley?

LorenC

Keep trying for better, or get out of the way.
Do any of you shooters know of a source for long .228 bullets? Need to be stout jackets to handle the speed of course. My brother would love to have some more.. and it tis the season...

Thanks 219. Adding to that: http://www.reloadbench.com/cartridges/w228ackmag.html

I remember seeing a bunch of original Speer 228 bullets for sale a couple days ago but can't remember where. I'll let you know if I see them again.

Very interesting and Thank You to those who responded. "it developed only a limited popularity". "but are now difficult to obtain" ( the bullets).

Sounds similar to the old 22 Savage High Power cartridge, that also has a slightly oversize .224" bore diameter.

The term "obsolete" comes to mind.

Just checked in my copy of "Cartridges of the World", 10 th edition, and there it is on page 179.

And the 22 Savage High Power also uses .228" dia. bullets, may be available from someone who specializes in obsolete cartridges, and/or at Gun Shows?

I don't envy you in your search. If it were mine, I'd rebarrel to a modern, available cartridge.

I realize none of this is any help. Hopefully someone will jump on who can help you. Good luck. :)

Odd as the trouble seems that's the reason for liking it. A play thing that is an oddball. It's one of the big power .22's back in the day, incredible results on smaller game, absolutely devastating on varmints. Pop came across it 50+ years ago, and held on to it, playing once in a while. He's handed it on to big brother in Ketchikan so now it's his turn to make it smoke.
Luckily, the .219 Zipper Improved High Wall is coming my way. :)

Shall I red label some Ginkgo Biloba? :)

This was very well said and I enjoyed reading it. Thanks for sharing this.

LorenC: You might get some hits if you run a "Want to Buy" ad on this sites Marketplace/Components thread. Might get someone looking into their supply of "oldies but goodies". Doesn't cost anything to try. ;)

a quick google search, and the first page to come up sells .228 bullets...

if you want to spend a little money, and get into a new hobby, you could swage your own! That would make it really interesting!

The .22 Hi-Power Savage was designed by Charles Newton around 1900 for the Savage Model 99 used 70gr. .228 bullets at 2800fps. There were many early wildcats, Ackley, Newton, and Barnes that used .228 bullets, usually heavy for caliber. A strong bolt action would produce much higher velocities.
The bullets were heavily constructed and gave good performance on deer sized game. They obtained bullets from Sisk and Barnes or swaged their own.
Hope this gives you some historical perspective. The old timers such as Newton, Ackley, and Barnes were way ahead of their times.

Hornady makes .227 70 gr bullets. You can buy them at Midway. I suspect they are designed for the .22 HiPower velocities which are rather mild compared to the Ackley and Newton. You can check with Hornady.
Hope this helps.

did a little more digging around....

oh, and one other thing... please post some pics of the gun and the cartridge!

I want to see a pic of the 228 Ackley case next to something familiar, like a 308 or 223...

Fantastic men!! Thanks for the suggestions and links/such. Several I hadn't thought of. Gracias!

It would be interesting to check with Hornady and Buffalo Arms about the velocity limits of their 70 gr. bullets. A bullet designed for .22 Hi-Power loads at 2800fps simply will not be satisfactory on deer sized animals at 500-600 fps more in the Ackley. The High-Power was based on a 30-30 case and the Ackley on a shortened 30-06 and has a case capacity of about 55 gr. That is why the Barnes 0.032 Copper Jacketed bullets were so popular. Very interesting project. What rifle is it chambered in? Twist? Keep us posed on developments. I have some old loads for the .228 Ackley Magnum using IMR 4350.

Yep, agree with you wboggs. Those hipower bullets just aren't up to the task. It's a tough bullet for sure that will work PREDICTABLY in the .228 AM.

One thing that also bears mention here maybe, for a time in his youth Pop worked for, or with, Ackley. He may have acquired this .228 at that time. I'll have to ask again since I've forgotten the particulars.

I knew him pretty well when he was located in Salt Lake City. If your Dad worked with him, he learned from the master. What are the details on your rifle? Too bad you can't locate some Barnes bullets. I would advertise on every site you can think of and hope some old timer like me has some.
