Bullet seating Question

I use an rcbs bullet seater die nothing fancey, My question is when I set the bullet on top of my shell then I start to insert it up into the die my shell moves around inside the die before it ever bottoms out, anotherwords it fits very loosly I'm in the process of saving up for a redding competition die and I hope it's going to be a tight fit or is it loose like the rcbs die the caliber I'm loading for is a 300rum if that makes a difference. In my mind their is know way the bullet is seating with the center of the bore . Maybe I'm wrong about this what do you think?

Most 'competition' bullet seaters use a sliding sleeve in which the case being loaded centers itself, with the upper portion being of a diameter appropriate to center up the bullet while the press ram is raised.

I haven't used RCBS dies in a long time, never for rifle cartridges) so without watching over your shoulder I can't say if this is typical or not.

You have a shooting buddy who uses the die you want to buy?

Beat a lot of disappointment if you could load a few rounds on somebody else's nickel before you buy one, only then to find the Redding doesn't fit your brass any better.

Jeremy, I run an RCBS standard die on my .308 There is a little slop but not as much as you mention. I rotate the case three times on short stokes while seating the bullet and get very good concentricty for a base unit, normally between .002 and .003 runout. I also clean up / turn my necks and aneal so I'm sure that helps as well.

spclark, I don't have a buddy that shoots the ultra mag. but I just got through loading some 300 win mag rounds using a rcbs die for it also, and it didn't seem to be as bad I'm thinking maybe the reason I have so much play is because of the size of my hull . Scout1 thanks for the advice I'll try rotating during the bullet seating process.
