Bullet Jam

Greetings, I was reading 6mm Dasher reloading and the shooter was talking about a "hard" jam. I remember reading about a jam that will engrave the bullet. How would a hard jam be measured? is engraving a hard jam? Thanks for looking

If it were me I would consider a hard jam similiar to when you check for OAL using a case/bullet combo.. That usually leaves a good .020-.030 tall marks on the bullet..

Seat it long with lots of neck tension- close the bolt, open it and measure that 3 or 4 different times thats your hard jam

Dusty is right on. I use Dusty's method with great success!

Remember to put some Imperial Sizing Wax on the bullet to allow it to be extracted without pulling out of the case.

i'v had some not so good experience when seating bullets into the lands. '"hard jamming"(.020+ into the lands) a bullet with a gentle ogive(7 or 8) will give you long engravings...longer than wide. hornady's vmax bullets are different in that the ogive is quick off the bearing surface and these bullets will not take much "jamming" before they self seat, even with .002+ neck tension. guns with a gentle slope(1 degree 30) to it's lands allow the .020 while land slopes that are sharper will seat a bullet quickly. the worst combo is a vmax and sharp slope.
