Bullet Core Lead?

For you that make your own BR or fclass bullets , is 99.75% lead too pure? If so why ive found a supplier near me that will supply 1/4" 99.75% lead wire in quantities of 25lb and up but if i want more antimony its a minimum of 200lbs.

Before someone mentions it I cant use Charlies cores as he wont ship to Canada.

Thanks

Everything you need to know about lead for bullet cores. Interesting. Many areas covered. Shape of round nose and pointer bullets related to hardness and force to form and many other things.

I buy bullet wire from Crown Metals in WI I believe. It is the same place that Charlie Hood buys from. Suggested to me by George Ulrich. Sold in approx. 50 lb rolls. Don't know if they ship to Canada.

Do you know what percentage lead it is? What diameter are you using for what Caliber?

The wire I use for 6mm bullets is .187 diameter. I am pretty sure it is .5% antimony. What caliber are you interested in making?

Inquiring minds want to know: doesn't the strength of the core contribute to the strength of the bullet? Target bullets, especially for long range, are usually pushed to high velocity and require fast spin rates to stabilize the long low-drag profiles. Surely the jacket isn't strong enough to fully support a soft lead core.

99.25 % 200 #'s may seem like alot but when you start, I think you will find its not so much. you have to cut the cores over a couple of grains ,the first and last cuts are wasted and the bleed off is waste. also with the current affairs lead is becoming more of a pain to get...

Thanks the more I think of it your probably right and you probably save some shipping cost by buying more at a time.

Also is 1/4" what you would recommend for doing 30cal?

Thanks

Just a suggestion. See if they will let you have a sample and go test it to see if it works for you?

Lots of cores have applications with "pure" lead, just like some other applications favor alloys. With a test, you can know for sure if they work for you and your recipes and in case you like to bond your jackets you can verify the lead isn't contaminated with something that prevents it from wetting the jacket.

Listen to this guy. He has been at this a long time and probably has forgotten more than any keyboard shooter could ever hope to know.
