bullet comparator

Im trying to figure out seating depth with a bullet comparator and i think I ordered the wrong kit. Does it really matter if I have the right bushing, as long as I keep everything constant?

Thanks
Nick

Give us some more info, so we can help.

what kit did you order?

Sounds like you're doing something like this.... using a .224 bushing to measure .243 bullets

The measurements are relative, not necessarily absolute, which means consistency is most critical. Even though you can measure consistently with the wrong tools, that doesn't mean you should. If it were me, I'd try to get the correct bushing. The again, anything is better than measuring to the tip of the bullet.

Here is what you want from Sinclair's.

If your shooting custom-made flat-based bullets you can measure them from just about any point and get great results.
If on the other hand your shooting the long thin VLD type bullets you want to measure them as close to the land dimensions as is possible. The ogive is not consistent enough further up the ogive on this type of bullet and your accuracy will suffer if using the wrong bushing.
I would post you a picture of the affect but all of my pictures are too big to post here.

I started using the Sinclair "nut" and had some difficulty with it wiggling and moving around when trying to take an accurate dimension. Switched to the Hornady/ Sinclair types that clamp onto the dial indicator & now get better results. More consistant measurements without as much effort.

Thanks everyone

The kit i have is Hornady LNL Comparator Set . But doesn't have the right size bushing, i've ordered it and won't load until I have the right size.

Thanks again

for a couple more bucks get the Sinclair stainless bushing inserts.... I find them superior to the Hornady aluminum inserts for repeatability since theyare harder and I think ground a bit better
