Bullet Change

When switching bullets (105 VLD bergers to 105 regulars) and you already have a load worked up for one and you check the ogive bullet length with a comparitor and the difference is say .050 longer or shorter how do you determine the starting seating depth for the new bullet? Would you add or subtract the .050 to the bullet seating die or would you just leave the bullet seater at the same setting as it was used for the the bullets that the load was aready shooting well?

Questions: how do you determine the starting seating depth for the new bullet? Would you add or subtract the .050 to the bullet seating die or would you just leave the bullet seater at the same setting as it was used for the the bullets that the load was already shooting well?

Answer: I'd make the change in the Seater for the difference in the ogive measurement, in or out, then adjust the charge based on what I saw on paper after firing 7 to 10 ... three round groups, with the new bullet. Basically, If I change anything, I'm working up a new load.

Outdoorsman's last line is the ticket! Old saying, "what works for one doesn't necessarily work for another."

I would start from scratch, but take into consideration what velocity the VLD shot best at, and my experience with previous non VLD bullets for seating depth. There is not substitute for a methodical load workup procedure. I like to do this at the range, shooting over a chronograph, with flags.

I always measure to get the 0 distance to the lands from bullet to bullet. From there you probably have to find again how much jam or jump works best for the new bullet. If the bullet design is similar, I start with what worked before with that design. I pay no regard to the OAL, just distance to lands.
