Built a tuner today !

Thought I would try my lathe skills out . Went out late after I finished and works like charm ,only tried at 100 yards though.

Picture not very good ! I did want to thread barrel so I built a threaded sleeve . Need to find someone with labor etching and mark it . 24TPI on the threads . I would show but I need to mark setting before I remove . Top groups were center X , it was dark and had to shoot with flashlight on target and did not really get time to really play with settings but 1/4 inch turn of tuner would make a lot of difference . Got lucky and found sweet spot with center X. Shot some SK Long Range Match with same settings and was not very good . Started with SK pistol match but did not play with much, was in a hurry ! Mesquitos were bad and buzzing in my ears ! Lol

There was a time I made my own tuners. This design was copied from a bottle cap shooter and machinist named Bob Mesina. His were made using stainless steel. Mine used aluminum for the main body and weight head.

It consists of four parts. A threaded sleeve that is glued to the barrel. A main body that is threaded. A weight head, and a bloop tube that functions as a locking device to hold the tuner in place and as a bloop tube. The way to set this tuner and repeat the setting is to use a caliper to measure how far the tube sticks out of the weight head. I didn't have a way to put numbers on it.

The thinking behind this design was to delete the requirements for the o rings, eliminate the ball bearing and spring found in popular tuners. The tuner would lock down tight and not allow any unnecessary motion or vibration.

The tuners worked but they were labor intensive. Each was made individually, one at a time, which means each one was a little different from the last.

Now the hard question did they work any better than those you can buy off the shelf? I can't say they did but the exercise helped me learn a lot about tuners.

Yes ! It was to windy to shoot here yesterday so I just grabbed some old barrel cutoffs and went t cutting and measuring it turned out better than I hoped .

That's great! I love making parts for my rifle. Always gets a look and some questions at the range when I use them.
