Building up Check - AR15 Fixed Stock

I am trying to build up a fixed AR15 stock so that I can get a good cheek weld. I have a 20 MOA riser bock which adds about 1/2" to the scope height but my rings are fairly low (approx. 1"). I am using moleskin/pipe wrap to build up the stock. . My problem is that the way I have the scope set up, whatever I build up interferes with the charging handle. If I build up the stock so that the charging clears, my head is too far back on the stock. I can set the scope up for proper eye relief, but with my head that far back it is just not comfortable (neck too upright). I cannot get rid of the riser w/o going to higher rings or the scope bell will not clear. In addition, I move my scopes around to a couple of different rifles & they all have 20 MOA bases on them. This year I only intend on shooting the AR out to 600 yards, but next year I plan on shooing at 1000 yards as well.

I also posted this question at SnipersHide, but have not gotten any good advice yet.

Went through the same problem. Tried various adjustable stocks but I just prefer the A2. The solution I arrived at was to go with a side charging upper. But that knocks you out of service rifle comps. But can run it in match rifle comps.

Sounds like you have a side charging upper in your future... Easiest fix to this problem that I see. Brownells carries a Gibbz side charger for just over $200

This is a charging handle and raised cheekpiece combined:

There are several photos on this link so you get an idea of how it works.

The HABU MOD 1 Advanced Engagement Charging Handle allows for robust charging of the AR-15, while simultaneously integrating a cheek riser. The HABU’s unique form factor is designed for the non-dominant hand to charge the rifle, much like a semi-automatic handgun, using your full grasp & hand. This design is completely ambidextrous, with no small latches to worry about engaging. Proper cheek weld can also be attained, without the use of stock mounted cheek risers, which often interfere with operating the charging handle. The HABU works with any commercially available AR-15 buttstock, both collapsible & fixed. The cheek riser’s placement can also be adjusted front to back to suite the shooter’s needs & comfort. When shooting suppressed, gases exiting the rear almost entirely negated. The handle is machined from 7075 T6 aluminum, with the cheek riser being molded from a matte black polymer.

I am not concerned about service rifle comps. Now, 200-16x - that excites me!

Can I get my upper milled for a side charger? I am guessing that I would also need a side charging BCG as well. Would it just be easier to get a PRS stock, or, will a PRS not take care of the cheek weld problem?

This is what I run, made by XLR. Depending on your length of pull, you can reverse the cheek piece. It's basically the same stock they offer for their chassis, but set up for no drop.

Looks nice - how does it compare to a Magpul PRS? Also, I am concerned that the charging handle will still force me to keep my head farther back than what I like. I guess there is no way for me to know w/o trying.

A lot will depend on your scope height, or if you really like to crowd the charging handle when you shoot.

I have never owned the PRS, so I am not sure how much for and aft adjustment the cheek piece has.

The XLR has more adjustment points and is lighter, but requires tools. Sadly unless you know someone with one it would be hard to try.

If you come up with a measurement to check, I would gladly do that.

Heres one of the side cocking options. http://www.fulton-armory.com/boltcarrierar-15gistrippedmodifiedforsidecocking.aspx The universal charging handle stays in place.Seems like and adjustable cheekpiece that can be slotted or better still cantilevered would keep you in the Service rifle game. When you try a side cocker, its easy to loose interest in the universal handle type.
Maybe I should try to whittle my own cantilevered riser out of wood or UHMW polyethelene, wrap it in moleskin & screw it to the stock. My stock is a fixed A2 & I don't mind drilling & tapping a couple of holes on it.

Prior to your post I have not thought about making a cantilevered cheek rest but don't see why I could not get one to work.
