Building a F/TR 308

I am in the process of a F/TR in .308. I have a Surgeon 581 and was going to use a Brux in hvy. Palma or a #17. The stock I am thinking of is a McMillian A3 & a NF NXS 8-32. Any thoughts ?
Thanks Glenn

Sounds like a solid build for F(tr). Get standard fill (not sniper fill) and with the #17 at 30" or less you should be OK even with a Sinclair bipod.

I was worried about the hvy. Palma, too much weight out front making it bounce on the pod. Stiffen the forend or just cut a 1.250 bc all the way down to keep it from touching.

If you have the room for any extra weight, install a mercury recoil reducer in the buttstock. This will help balance the rifle so that the muzzle is not heavy. The heavy Palma barrel is 8 ounces lighter than the #17 heavy varmint barrel and is 2 inches longer when finished. Your balance should be good.

I just looked at my A3 with a #6 Shilen in it, it sits high in the stock. I may go with the A5 for a lower center of gravity and wider forend.

Thanks Glenn

I'm just wondering about the weight. To be legal it has to be under 18lbs 2oz unless they changed it or I remember wrong. This setup sounds like it would be over the legal weight limit to me.

Also receommend you watch your weight and do not forget to include weight of your scope, mounts and bipod. I switched from a Sightron to a Nightforce scope on a similar set up and that pushed me over weight - no fun trying to find a few ounces (or more) while you are getting ready for a match.

The weight is always a struggle. I had a medium Palma Obemyer barrel fluted, a light McMillan stock, Omark action, a MWerks bi-pod, and a SS scope. Everything seemed real light, but weigh in at Lodi, I was just an ounce under. If I would have had a NF scope I would have been over.

At local matches its usually the honor system, but anywhere else you will weigh in.

It's a metal tube that is filled with Mercury to absorb the "shock" of recoil, mostly used in shotguns for Skeet, Trap & hunting they have found a place in rifle competition.

hi

do you think it would be easier to make weight with a mak tube gun single shot version with a 30 inch heavy palma, compared to say a mcmillan a5 or a manner stock??

myself as well i am going to do a new build this winter and i am concerned about my weight.

Darin, I'd call our boy over at Robertson and see about adjusting the finish weight of their Tac. I'm pretty sure you could get just the sort of weight you need. Would bee really nice to have enough weight left for one of Terry's mercury gizmos...

If your going tube gun I'd suggest a CSS, anything else I think would have to be composite.....I'm thinking that wood/laminate would be heavy.

Mike included the link to Competition Shooting Stuff (CSS), Gary Eliseo's company that develops and manufactures tube gun chassis. I have an RTM with a Borden long action and it shoots better than I can in either .308 or .284. Gary offers several configurations that would be suitable for your goal. It is worth noting that Jerry Tierney won a 600 yard Benchrest match shooting an Eliseo tube gun.

Would avoid the A5 because of the butt hook. Much easier to adjust elevation with the full bottom taper on an A2 or A3. The A5 only has a few inches to ride the rear bag vs. the full length of the butt on the others. AG in NC
