Building a .284 Sheane stainless seater die

I own several of the Wilson stainless steel seaters and I love them. I am currently in the process of building a .284 shehane and have the PT&G reamer with .313 neck and .189 freebore. Comparing the cartridge drawings for the 7mm - 08 and the .284 on 6mmBR.com inicate that the .284 is only .1244" longer than the 7mm - 08. The rest of the 7mm - 08 dimensions will enlarge nicely to the Shehane size. This leads me to believe that if I make a pilot for the reamer that fits the Wilson 7mm - 08 neck, I could ream the 7mm - 08 stainless seater with my Shehane reamer and get a die I could use.

Will the 7mm - 08 stainless seater die tolerate such a modification?

I made myself a set of dies for my 284 shehanne. First I took my sizing reamer into a Newlon blank and made a awesome full length sizing die. Then I took my finish reamer to a straight 284 Forster ultra seating die I already had, worked like a charm.

If you check Wilson's seater list, you'll see that they don't offer a stainless (micrometer top) .284.

I did check (wilson's web site), and the 7-08 isn't offered in a micrometer top either. The only 7mm seater offered with the micrometer is the 7 WSM. Seems odd, but there it is.

If you check their catalog listing here

http://www.lewilson.com/catalog.html

They show the 7mm-08 seater available in stainless but not the .284. They e-mailed me today, however, and said the .284 IS available in stainless and that I would be better off to ream that with my Shehane reamer, so that is what I will do.

Thanks for all the input, guys.

You can email LE Wilson customer service and ask if the are making the die. I emailed them yesterday about a 7mm saum which is not on their list. They replied they are making them now and can be ordered.

Just to chime in........I have the Wilson SS micrometer seating die in .284 Win cut with the rifle's Shehane reamer. No problems.

I really like the hand dies for seating and neck sizing. Is anybody using a hand neck die for the 284 Shehane? In my Palma rifle, I full length size and partially neck size on the bench press followed by a Wilson neck die to complete the neck sizing.

You have got me scratching my head. That is the same link I was looking at. Looking at it again there is still no X in the SS seater column for 7-08. ???

Regardless, I'm glad you got your issue solved, and glad that Wilson is indeed making a .284 SS seater, as I'm in the same boat as you (wanting a 284 Shehane Wilson micrometer seater).

Oops! My bad. I was looking at the stainless neck sizer column. You are right, they don't show the bullet seater in stainless for anything in 7mm except the WSM. They CAN be had in .284, however. Amy at Bruno shooters went to bat for me and asked them today. They said they will make them. If they go that far, they might as well just make the 7mm Shehane and send it ready to use. I still didn't get a price, so I will report back on the final result once I have it. Wilson did say there is a $15 charge for drop shipping it directly to the customer (me). I think that will still come out cheaper than Wilson's list price.

I'm also checking with Bill Shehane to see if the custom Wilsons he has in stock are the micrometer top ones. He's asking $145 for them, but that might be in the right ballpark by the time I get a custom one from Wilson myself.

Gotta get up early in the morning and go chase deer here in Michigan. It does NOT look good this year on account of that disease that's been wiping them out for the last couple of years. Three years ago I counted all the shots I could hear on opening morning and there were over 180. The next year it was under 100. Last year it was 30 - 40. This year is pitiful. I heard about 6 shots last evening and one this evening. Tomorrow is the first Saturday of season, so maybe there will be more action. We'll see.

To be continued.....

Bill Shehane did get back to me to inform me that the custom Wilson dies he has for the Shehane .284 are the regular steel ones.

Anyone looking for a stainless micrometer top Wilson for the .284 Shehane is going to have to order a standard .284 (they do make them even though they are not in the product list) and ream it for the Shehane. Wilson support said I will need a .286 pilot on the reamer to do that.
