building 243 win to shoot 105 gr

Starting a new project! Building a 243 win on stiller tac 30 action. Not sure on barrel length & twist rate. Going to shot 105 gr Amax. Any help would be great! THANKS

Two things: I would consider the 6mm Remington and consider the .243 Ackley. I love the .243, but the case growth is rampant due to the 20-degree shoulder. This means you'll be trimming your cases regularly, and it will eventually lead to the discarding of otherwise good brass.

Something faster than 1:9 twist will do. You will hear plenty of people say the 1:9.125 on the Rem varmint models works fine but in my experience it is a bit marginal. As far as length goes get a barrel and slug it or air gage it. The muzzle should be at the narrowest spot in the range you are looking at, like say 24-28", to shoot it's best. Also need to know if you are considering a varmint contour/heavy barrel or something lighter weight. 26" is standard in factory varmint rifles and pretty practical most of the time if shooting from a rest. Lighter barrels and shorter lengths are better if you carry it around and fire free hand.

Excessive case growth can be caused by several factors like excessive pressure, rough chambers, and sizing issues. Maybe I'm lucky but my chamber is polished, I don't use the fastest loads I can, and I neck size only and usually only need to do the initial trim to 2.035" initial length

I have to chime in. Like has been said 1:8 is the bomb for 105 6mm / 243 projectiles. If your dies are set correctly you will get 10 or more reloads from that brass without much trimming if any. I HATE trimming brass and I personally have about 15 on my one set of 50 pcs of brass. The 243 is a great round. Ammo is avail anywhere if needed and really likes to be handloaded for. One of my favorites despite all of the others out there. Go for it and don't look back.

Thanks for your help! I went with a Hart 24 inch 1:8 with skip flute's. I have to stick with 243 win just what I want for now! I'm still looking for a gunsmith any idea's ?

How far are you from Winfield Iowa? Very competent smith. He has done 5 rifles for me over past year with impressive results. Uses PTG reamers. Turn around typical less that one week from parts received to returned. I can send pics' and/or examples of groups sizes.

I'm not sure how to upload photos to this site at this time, if you can email me an address I would be glad to send you some pics and photos of targets and load development. Sorry I haven't gotten back earlier than now. Let me know if I can help. Again, Mike is a great guy and very dependable. Scott
