Build or buy a 6br

I have been lurking on this site for a while and have caught the 6br bug. I have been trying to make up my mind about buying a new savage prechambered for 6br or buying a savage action and re-barrelling and replacing the stock. The rifle will be used for prairie dog hunting and paper punching. I have read threads where people have done both and want to know the pro's and con's of each method. My budget is in the $1000 dollar range for the rifle, am planning on using a sightron 4-14 scope that I already have.
Thanks
Jeff

I will never again spend time and money messing with a factory bbl. I would buy either just the action or buy a complete used single shot model 12 rifle and part out everything but the action. The 2nd way is cheaper but with the first way you can get one of the new cool target actions. I would go with the dual port set up and leave in the ejector for shooting varmints or in competition.

I can recommend the SSS/Douglas set up in 12 twist. I had one and it would shoot 2's, 3's and 4's in actual BR competition. Not good enough to beat the BR rifles but still pretty darned good. I also have a Pacnor prefit in 6.8 SPC that will do the business. I wouldn't have any qualms about ordering a Shilen prefit either.

Jeff,

With your budget I think you need to go with a stock Savage 6BR. A custom rifle will cost substantially more:

Action,Savage PTA) - Trued $500
Barrel + chambering and fitting $550
Stock,Simple BR to Custom Prone) $300 - 1000

Custom = $1500 to $2000 BEFORE putting on scope rails, rings, bases, sights, etc.

Before I get a lot of negative comments... for the stock price I'm talking about one with no adustments,Simple BR) to one with adjustable buttplate, cheek piece, rail, etc,Custom Prone).

FYI,

Doug

The SSS/Douglas bbls are $305. To begin with I would go with either of the factory Savage laminated stocks, the BSS or BVSS. You can get them used for $150 or less.

If you purchase an old style short or long single shot you can get them for app $350 with the tupperware stock. Sell the stock and bbl for $100 and you have $250 in a single shot action that will do whatever the LRPV action will do. You will have to buy an aftermarket trigger, it will most likely be superior to the Accutrigger.

You can find old style BVSS-S rifles for app $450. Then all you need is the new aftermarket bbl.

Thanks for the replies.
I have been leaning toward building one, from what I have read changing barrels on savage rifles seems pretty easy. I guess I was wondering if there is any advantage accuracy wise in the target actions. They appear to be a little stiffer than the standard 10-110 action.
The next question I have is there any way to get the 6br to feed in a magazine or should I plan on a single shot follower?

Jeff

I think you should count on single loading. I would definitely keep waiting until I got a decent deal on a single shot action or a whole rifle to part out. Having that big uninterupted bedding surface is a big advantage.

With your budget, I would buy a used Savage BVSS and rebarrel it with a custom barrel. Here is an example of what you can buy on the web - $565: http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=124386732

Then buy a Pac-Nor pre-chambered barrel in 6mmBR: http://www.pac-nor.com/pricelist/

and you are in business for under your budget.

The BVSS stock is a great one in my opinion.
