Build Opinions

I have 8 Savages all models 10/110 in the safe, none of them getting any use any more ( unable to hunt now ),.
Do I sell some and take the substantial loss price wise and put the proceeds towards a custom action for a new build, or take one of these strip it down and build a new rifle using all high quality parts?
Either way it will wear a McMillan stock and a Hart barrel. Trigger not much choice except for RB2 but unsure of safety when getting down into the 3-4 oz. range.
Need to make a decision soon if I want this for next seasons matches.

Do whatever you want to do, don't look at it as a financial based decision. I like my customs, but a a customized Savage 223 is my favorite to shoot.

My 2¢. Sounds like you have all hunting rifles that won't be used again. You may take a hit on what you have in them but from where I sit, they're dead money anyway. Consider selling them all or enough to have a full custom built to meet your future needs.

For benchrest you already know the answer.

Life is too short to question your choice if you build on the savage . Sell the savages and buy a custom. Check Bob at Shooters corner . He's got great customs ( new and best deal , used ) ready to go . He's a great guy to deal with and knows his stuff .

Hart is a good barrel but I haven't purchase any since the early to mid 90's. still good shooters for varmints. Just don't know if I'd use one in today's times for competition. I'm not saying anything is wrong with them but you don't see anybody winning any tournaments with them. I've been chambering Krieger barrels on my personal rifles for quite a while now and they've all been hummers.... knock n wood.
Just my .02

What kind of competition?
If FTR, build on an action and sell the rest to finance it.
If BR, sell them all to finance it.
If PRS, build one and sell them all plus most of your other toys to finance it.
Good luck with your decision. It's not an easy one.

ETA: If FTR, I'm having very good luck with my Rock Creek. It shoots well and pretty fast. Great guys to deal with.

Are you dead set on a hart barrel?
I bought a couple back when they were the fad (IMO ALL barrel trends are a fad) and have bought several recently and they seem same-same allatime....... still wikkid good

But I am weird...... I also refuse to opine on the "button VS cut" debate cuz IMO they can all shoot.....especially since I began clocking them

I sold all my rem 700 rifles and actions and did this same thing. It cost me more money though! I bought a custom action, defiance rebel, and about half a dozen new blanks, and a lathe.... you see where this is going.... I did virtually steal a remmy with a mag bolt face this week that I’m going to spin one on though. Amazing the difference in quality of a custom action, no matter the maker, it’s like a car, they all have essentially the same features now a days, it boils down to if the cup holders are in the right place and if you like the way it looks.

BTW, to the OP, I did both....... I sold a bunch of good factory stuff to buy good custom stuff AND had some Remingtons "done up".

Dumbest thing ever

Now, as my shooting collection refines over the years I'm currently setting on two tricked out Rem700 actions saying "well, I've got a grand IN them...I should build something on them..."

And just not doing it!

I've bought and built 7 custom actions, while staring at the 700s......which I can't sell for 250.00 each

One'a these days I'll build something on those 700s.......

You'll be surprised how your rifles in that safe are holding their value vs what you originally paid. I haven't lost money on a rifle purchased ever. Most I have made money. At worst, I've shot them a few years and sold them for what I paid originally. Can't explain the reason for the prices holding up, but most of mine are/were Tikkas and Savages bought new and used. Don't undervalue your rifles. If you're not hunting with them anymore, just sell them and build what you want. You have plenty of money/value to work with in your old rifles unless you have beaten them up over the years (doesn't sound like it if you keep them in a safe).
