BUILD-280AI

THINKING ABOUT DOING A BUILD IN 280AI. ONLY SAW THIS CASE IN PICTURES. LOOKING FOR SOMEONE TO SEND ME A CASE TO CHECK OUT.
WILL PAY FOR CASE AND SHIPPING. THANKS

This is a great caliber. Really shines with 140 grn bullets. Velocities of 3200+ realistically attainable from 24" tube with modest pressure, super accuracy and practically forever case life. Id look hard at a model 700 LA or custom clone, #3 Brux@24", classic style stock, and a scope around 10-12x on top end. Not an ultralightweight but very manageable.

Great cartridge, but do your research, as there are two versions..
280 Ackley Improved ( P.O. Ackley)
280 Ackley Imp. 40 Degree ( Nolser )

Pick the Nosler version.

First, it has SAAMI standards acceptance. No Ackley cartridge has ever been (or will ever be) accepted by SAAMI, cuz no two Ackley chambers are even close to being the same.

Second, the shoulder has more support with fire forming, so head space issues are non-existent.

And third, you can get factory brass, in case you don't want to waste time and materiel making cases.

Swap em around. The original "280AI" was/is the 280 Remington Imp 40*. The "280AI" that was made by Nosler and given SAAMI specs is known as the 280AI. Dies are also marked accordingly. My AI was the Rem Imp 40* version. And yes id go with the SAAMI spec version were I building another. 140 NAB and VV N165 really shines from a 24" tube

THANKS GUYS FOR ALL YOUR INPUT. STILL IN THE RESEARCH MODE.
I DEFINETLY WOULD GO WITH THE SAAMI SPEC VERSION.

If running a LA with .473 bolt face, it doesnt get any better than a 280AI. Just to be different tho you could build a 284Win with heavier bullets seated long

I've got three 284s, all intended for LR shooting. The 284's case capacity is nearly 6grs less than that of a fireformed 280 AI, and at least with WW brass, it doesn't take a very warm load to wind up with loose primer pockets. As an example, running moly'd or HBN coated 180s at 2800fps out of a 30" bbl with H4831 will loosen pockets after three firings. Hard as it is to get brass, and as expensive as it is when you do find it, this gets painful. My reamer was ground for use with WW brass, so that's not the problem. I think it's more to do with the rebated casehead and/or short fat case body that causes the primer pocket issue. Am playing with a box of Lapua 6.5x284 necked-up to 284 to see if their brass is tougher. Hate to give up on the 284 - it's a very accurate cartridge.

THANKS DENNIS AND 280 ACK FOR INFO. I HAVE A 280 (STANDARD) NOW THAT I USE FOR HUNTING,
MCMILLIAN EDGE STOCK,JEWELL TRIGGER, UNDER 7.5LBS SCOPE AN ALL THAT I REALLY LOVE.
I LIKE THE 280 REM. BUT LOOKING FOR SOMETHING WITH A LITTLE MORE TO HELP WITH THOSE LONG RANGE SHOTS WITH HEAVIER BULLETS. THINKING THE 280AI WILL DO JUST FINE. JUST MY THOUGHTS FOR NOW.
SO FAR I LIKE KREIGER BARREL, JEWELL TRIGGER, 280AI CALIBER, NEW TRUED REM 700 ACTION. WANT A BETTER ACTION BUT I CAN'T SEE SPENDING 1200/1400/ BUCKS FOR IT. HAVN'T DICIDED ON A STOCK FOR IT YET. GOD MY HEAD IS SPINNING!!!!!!! JUST GOING TO TAKE MY TIME ON THIS ONE AND MAKE SURE ITS WHAT I REALLY WANT.

You can be in a Stiller action for less than $1000. Money very well spent from my experience. For those longer shots id look into Noslers new Accubond LR bullets. While LW rigs are great to pack around, no love for them here when the shots are long. Brux or Kreiger #4 fluted @26" would be my barrel of choice. Both top quality tubes. Id go with the one with cheapest price and fastest ship time. Brux CS is second to none. Ken and Norm are super folks to deal with and they stand behind their products
