Bugs in corn

Partner just called me. We have two barrels of shelled corn. He went to get some today and said it was full of bugs. He called them weveels he said they were black.
Question one: will deer eat the corn?
Question two: any way to get ride of them or is corn ruined

I wouldn't worry about feeding it to animals (except to humans). Most grains are subject to bug infestation and can be found in stored grain. If he is worried about feeding it to deer, find someone with some hogs and give the grain to them to feed their hogs, or put it into the landfill. If it were me I would feed the deer.

Feed it to the deer. They will eat it.

Feed it quick or you'll have nothing but husks and dust left.
They'll eat it if they are hungry and don't have an alternative.

We put the corn for the chickens in a black barrel in sun and the heat will kill the bugs.

I might try and freeze the corn. That should kill the bugs. It’s always something.

Heat will probably kill them as said above, freezing may just slow them down.

Freezing is not an effective way to kill weevils (grain bugs). It will help for storage but bugs have a remarkable ability of waking up when thawed. Plenty of insecticides will do the job but I wouldn't bother. Just spread it thin at your feeding sites and use it up promptly.

I recommend feeding it quick, when I was way younger I had a horse that that I picked a couple barrels of corn for. I noticed that those “wevils” were in the corn and by the time I got down to the bottom 1/4 of the barrel when you would remove the lid it looked like the entire mess of sludge was moving.. NASTY as heck….. don’t even like thinking about it. That is what drove me to want to be cremated when the time comes. Damn those “bugs”
Wound up pouring diesel fuel in the barrel and lighting it off.

We got what we could out of the two bbls. We put the good corn in freezer. Threw the rest out and washed out nasty yucky ferminted maggot filled corn.

If it had maggots it was wet. I imagine you saw wevels.
Any chemical that will kill the bugs will probably make the deer shy away from it.

FYI I would not add anything to your containers until fumigated and aired out. Damn things are easier to get than get rid of.

CO2 is you best bet for storing the grain and keeping it edible. A good source is a bit of dry ice.

Weevils is what it is

Corn isn’t ruined
Coons & squirrels will eat more than the deer will - unless there’s hogs in your area..
The freezer will worsen the moisture problem and ferment worse when taken out

We run it through a heat dryer to dry ours down… storage is in a grain bin open vents at the top…. Till unloading time

I had a 40# bag of wild bird seed that has a lot of corn in it. When opened it up had a lot of maize weevils in it, dumped it in the back yard ,deer had it cleaned up in couple of days.

Checked on the corn in freezer and it is frozen. Not frozen together.. We'll start feeding deer closer to rifle season opening. ( Oct 14).
