Budget 6XC part deux

I've been ask by several folks how the Savage 6XC project has been progressing. Well I've done more shooting and have gotten some very encouraging results.

Let me start by saying that comparatively speaking this rifle hasn't shot that great at short ranges. 1/2"-3/4" groups have been the norm....quite adequate for me none the less. Where things start getting interesting is at longer ranges. Accuracy seems to get better and better as ranges get stretched out. I'll tell you what we've found out.....

#1 My reloads: Many of you have been loading much longer than I. I've only been at it for 17 years or so and it's never been for extreme true long range accuracy. Yeah, there are a few very accurate varmint rifles in my stable but getting shot opportunities past 3 or 400 yards was rare and coming up with quality medium range loads for 204's and 223's was pretty simple.

As it's turned out the 6XC hasn't been much trouble either.....With 105 Amax bullets and stiff doses of H4350 or RL17 my velocities have been quite good from the 28" barrel. I won't post my charge weights (PM me if you'd like to know) but I can tell you the speeds and standard deviations.....they are zinging out of the barrel at 3150 with RL17 to 3165 with H4350 FPS (measured at the muzzle with a magnetospeed) with H4350 having an SD of around 4 fps and RL17 around 8 fps.....I was shocked....here's the chrono data which has been very consistent shot to shot once the barrel is warmed up:

I'm using Norma brass, the aforementioned powders, CCI BR-2 primers and 105 Amax's seated about 10 thousandths off the lands. All put together with a Forster BR FL sizer and micrometer seater.

It seems that what I've learned over the years is paying off with high quality ammunition.

#2 The trigger....although terrible I've been able to shoot pretty well with the factory accu-trigger. A brand new SAV-2 showed up earlier this week and is now sitting in the rifle. After getting it all set up it appears to be an excellent upgrade. I can't wait to try it out!

#3.....and last but certainly not least how well it is shooting at longer ranges?......800 yards is all I've tried thus far but I was very surprised at the results....Like I said it hasn't been a great 100 yard shooter but it's turned in groups like this @ 800 yards on a couple different occasions so I see no reason to believe that it'll perform any differently in the future.......

That's a 1 inch dot......I know it's only 3 shots but there are reactive targets to shoot at too and it's much more fun to shoot those than it is to shoot groups....

All the advice I've gotten here and from my buddies at the range has helped get this thing rolling along. I look forward to some informal long range shooting.....I'm going to try some 115 DTAC's and some Hybrids but for now the 105 Amax's are performing very well. When the time comes to shoot 1400+ yards I'll need the extra BC of those 115 so hopefully those pan out too......More to come.....

Thanks for the update Damon555. It is quite a impressive cartridge. I Built mine as a hunting Rifle and it has delivered. Shooting the 105 VLD Hunting bullet at 3,150 FPS with RL17..The RL17 seems to be more temperature stable. I'm only using a 26" barrel and have not been able to get the speed out of H4350 that I can with RL17 in the colder weather. RL17 from 85 deg F down to 25 deg F has only lost 30 FPS. so I have been out there at 25 deg F and chrony'ed the RL17 at 3,150 FPS. H4350 lost about 90 FPS from 85 deg F to about 30 deg F and that was just no good for what I was doing. It has been a tough Hunting season. warm and wet. the deer are not moving till well after dark. But I finally had two doe at 175 yards. much closer than I would have liked but after several days of nothing I decided to fill those tags. all I can say is neither one moved out of their tracks. one was a perfect high shoulder shot, one I got a little far forward in the shoulder due to a poor rest, did not get to shoot off the bi-pod on either shot. so trying to rest on the bi-pod with the legs folded up. it or I was quite shakey .Have seen a BIG 13 point Buck but he has slipped by me a few times. unless we shoot him at dark. just kidding.. I may try tomorrow but I may just call it a season. so the 6XC and the 105 VLD did quite a job for me. I hoped to be able to tell ya I got to stretch it out to 500 600 yards but I did not. But it did do quite a number on them at 175 yards. Like hit with a Bolt of Lightening!..lol.....

FJIM The RL17 load I've worked up is shooting at the same velocity and point of impact as the H4350 load that shoots so well.....it's a grain less too. I was under the impression that the Hodgdon extreme powders were much more temp stable than the Reloader lines? Is that not true?

Sorry to hear you didn't get any long shots on those deer....but when it comes to a nice clean kill closer in is probably better any way. Good luck with the big fella....13 points would look good on the wall!

jcampbellsmith Thank you....I look forward to improving my shooting skills every time I hit the range. I enjoy the friendly competition of me against me! Don't let the 6XC sit around too long.....There's no time like the present to do load testing.

extreme...I call bullsh*t.. You go out and test it at different temperatures and tell me what you find out.
I know for sure there can be burn rate differences from powder lot to lot. It seems to me the H4350 I have is real slow.. I know RL17 is slower yet but it is high energy . The lot of H4350 I have been burning seems to almost be to slow of a powder . my max velocity with it has been at 40.5grs 3,060 FPS at 85 deg F.now is it just the lot i'm shooting, shorter 26" barrel I think it's a .236 bore. or a combination of all that. Now I have talked about this a lot but I have only seen this happen twice. if I go up to 41.0 Grs of H4350 I will have a sticky bolt and the velocity will go down to 2,990 FPS. so my experience with H4350 has been shoot's great at 75-85 deg F at 3,060 FPS but if it gets colder the velocity drops off fast. and there is that freaky up on the powder high pressure and velocity drop thing.

RL17 has shot almost as well in hot weather and if I go up to 41.0 grs. I get 3,219 FPS and a sticky bolt, pressure signs. 40.5 grs 85 deg F 3,180 FPS...25 deg F 3,150 FPS. so it seems I can shoot 40.5 grs year round..but it does group better in colder weather..I have been skeptical of the RL17 powder but it is proving it self to me to be the powder of choice for hunting. I did not keep the target but my last 700 yard group with that load was 3" outside to outside horizontal . I was very happy with that. I'm ready to play with it some at 1000 yards. Yo do have to keep in mind this is a #3 sporter barrel. not a heavy barreled target rifle.. that sounds good but I have and have seen a whole lot a sporter rifles shoot sub 1/2 MOA so it's not a big deal to me. just some after three shots you can fry a egg on the barrel...not so for the 6XC burning 40.5 grs of powder..

lol....That's good news for me really...H4350 is pretty darn hard to find but RL17 is in abundance. With the velocity match it appears to shoot just as good as the Hodgdon powder. I haven't done much velocity testing in the winter but since my buddy has that magnetospeed things got much simpler!

Damon555 have you had time to test any H4350 as the temperature dropped ?
I'm completely and totally happy with my Rifle and the 6XC cartridge. Works As Advertised .. lol.....
cant wait to get out next weekend(worken this weekend) and shoot some steel. May spin a few out to 1K. it will be cold..it's 27 deg F right now..Also January will be after a few coyotes. I cant get enough 6XC shop talk.

I wish I could say yes but I haven't. The supply of H4350 is so limited that I'm down to the last pound (175 more reloads)...Maybe should have bought more when I had the chance. But there were only 3 or 4 pounds on the shelf at the time and I snagged 2 of them....I don't like to clean a place out when I buy reloading components.....especially relatively scarce ones. Someone else needs some too.....

On the other hand I have several other powders to try....I'll keep working with RL17 which shows some real promise and a fresh jug of IMR4350 found its way into the reloading room last week. I just hope that the barrel doesn't get shot out before I can get a hold of more H4350....lol

Probably go shoot some today....The stock got painted last night so it all depends on if it's dry or not....
