Brushed Bolt

Hey guys I need some info. I built a 6BRX on a 700 SA and now the fired primers look like a volcano. Guess I need the bolt brushed. Who does this? Thanks Jim

Jim,

That would help to bushing. What primer are you using? CCI BR4 or 450 will help. What load are you shooting? And you may have to backoff the load.

Greg quoted me $55 labor + $9 Priority return shipping a month ago. Price may vary depending on what kind of bolt you send. I have a Quadlite bolt in his shop right now being bushed.

jr600yd: is your 6BRX the first rifle in this cartridge you've ever shot? How did you arrive at the load you're shooting?

SPClark,

You mentioned a Quadlite bolt being bushed. I was under the impression that the stock bolt had the smaller firing pin. Am I misinfomed?

My Quadlite is an early SN,008) and never barrelled. Going to bbl it this Winter to a BRX. Have got my supply of Wolf SRM primers and hope that is the way to go.

Thanks for the info guys.BUSHING....right, guess these fat fingers hit an extra key. The load, I'm using Lapua 6BR cases, 33 grs of varget pusing a Berger 105 VLD and lit off by a Rem 7 1/2 primer. Anyone got Greg's phone # or e-mail address?
Thanks Jim

Greg T just did my Rem-700 in a 6br which was cratering at only at 29 gr varg. Cost was $64.00 for everything. I should have sent it sooner. My primer hole was at .075. Now is .062 where it should be. He does great work.

Bob3700,

Mine's later than yours, but I have no idea about the firing pin specs; I never measured it.

I did note my FP appeared to be hitting the bolt face as there was a small burnished area on one side, visible with a loupe. Though the FP hole looked to be sized close to the FP diameter, all of the primers I shot with it from day 001 showed a bit of a crater with what I took to be otherwise reasonable loads in 6XC using either Wolf or the original Russian KVB-7 primers.

Hey guys thanks for the help. Sent the bolt off to greg today. $64 bucks with a 2-3 day turn around D@# can't beat that!
Jim

SPCLark,

I checked my Quadlite bolt and it has the .072" firing pin from the factory.

While it looks like a tight fit, pin to hole, it is the larger diameter.

Any competent gunsmith can bush a firing pin. Many talented shooters can do it as well. Jim Borden wrote a great how to article on the BRC site.

Rustystud,

I agree that bushing the bolt is simply good machine work that can be accomplished on a lathe.

The problem that has puzzled me is how to you turn/grind the firing pin down to a precise fit without have some sort of specialized equipment?

Bob

Here's another vote for Greg Tannel,Gre-Tan Precision) to bush your bolt and firing pin. Excellent work, good turn around time. A nice fellow to do business with.
