Breech Band

Anybody heard of a "breech band" on a bolt action hunting rifle? What is it and how does it work?

Ive owned 22s with a barrel band tensioner system, way out front by the forward sling swivel.
This appears to be a silver ring, around the barrel, directly in front of the action.

Thanks

I've been involved in general gunsmithing for over fifty years and rifle building for nearly as long. This is something that slipped past me. I don't have a clue. WH

I have seen bands around the barrel just in front of the receiver. Sometimes used in European rifles as the base for the forward claw mount. Just took a barrel like this off a receiver. Have also seen a similar band used for a rear sight base when the forward portion of the barrel was too small, mostly on European rifles with skinny barrels

Now, if the OP would be so kind as to tell us what make of rifle or action this is, whether or not he has had it out of the stock, and any other pertinent information, someone will be able to give an answer. My guess, given the lack of info, is that it is a recoil lug or a spacer to adapt a barrel. I have seen adapter sleeves on barrel which might appear to be a band. Could be a barrel nut. Could be part of a stock attachment system.
Is this a trick question maybe?
By the way, the only reason I am here, typing on a laptop at 2 AM, is that I had to get up and investigate a disturbance at the campground. I'm getting way too old for this stuff. Now I'm just winding down before going back to bed. WH
