Breaking in a new barrel

There's a polish out there that one would use on a new barrel before any shots are fired......

Can someone tell me the brand name of this stuff and if it actually helps with reducing fouling?

Thanks

Sounds like your looking for JB's bore cleaner.....

Yeah I think thats the stuff.

Getting a new Douglas in 6BR, they don't hand lap the barrels so it takes a little bit more on the others I have to get 'broke in' so they don't copper up so fast.

The others I've used usually take a couple hundred shots it seems.

I've heard using this stuff can help out and not lead to so much copper fouling.

True or false?

I think JBs is good for really fouled or pitted barrels. I wouldn't use it for lapping and I definitely would shoot said barrel before doing anything. I don't know that JB is abrasive enough to effictively lap a barrel.

I had a Douglas Match barrel in 223 installed on my Model 700 two years ago. I did not follow any elaborate break in procedures - just my normal cleaning regiment which is cleaning after every 20 to 30 rounds.

This rifle continually holds 1/4 MOA with tuned reloads.

I'm just relating my experience - I'm not making any pronouncements on the "proper" break in procedure.

Thanks guys, I've had great luck with just shooting and cleaning, maybe I'll just stick with it!

this may not be what you are asking about but there is a product that advertises is will reduce powder fouling and copper ADHERING to the bore. john barsness has written about it and i read an article about his experience and had to try the stuff as i do not like cleaning guns. Dynamic Finishes Companies sells it...dyna bore coat. many say "snake oil" but i have coated all my guns and swear the cleaning of some is reduced to just minutes, some have no copper and others come clean with just a few patches. the product is a suspension of .25 micron sized ceramic particles that adhere to the bore. firing 6-8 rounds will "cure" the ceramic to the bore lining and carbon and copper come off very easily. i think the reasoning here is that the "ceramic" is glass like substance- to- be and the heat and pressure of powder sublimation and bullet friction(heat) melts or changes it into an extremely thin layer of ?glass and stuff doesn't stick to it. once coated, you can't use abrasives over it or it will scratch. it won't help firecracking or a rough bore. i was a true skeptic but i don't mind cleaning my guns anymore.

I would not paste a Douglas barrel. Run 50 rounds or so through it and see how she shoots. Try boretech copper remover with a boretech alloy jag and see how little fouling you actually have.
